BBC Radio 2 weekday presenters Jeremy Vine and Vernon Kay have gone head-to-head…in a snoring competition.

Kay, who replaced Ken  Bruce in the mid-morning slot last month, challenged lunchtime presenter Jeremy Vine to record himself while asleep to find out if – and how loud – he snores…with the ensuing results leaving both stars dissolving in fits of laughter.

On yesterday’s show, both the presenters – and listeners – were shocked at just how epic their night-time noises were, with a 2:48am rumble by Vernon Kay apparently sparking a ‘dig in the ribs’ from Strictly star wife Tess Daly.

Vine, 58, told Kay: ‘You changed my life but not in a good way when you told me about this app.’

As the audio played of Vine’s night’s sleep, he admitted that he assumed the app wouldn’t ‘record anything’.

However, he was left in disbelief at the nocturnal rumbles that were noted – including a ‘Richter scale’ snore at 1:21am and a 3:19am inhale that left Vernon Kay exclaiming ‘Wow!’

A mortified Vine, head in hands, uttered: ‘What have you done?’

However, the TV and radio star was apparently no match for his younger colleague Kay, 49, who offered up ‘This was me at 2:48am’.

The onslaught of snores that followed left both men wide-eyed at the audio.

No contest: Although Vine was loud, Kay’s 2:48am snuffle was a real rattler

One listener wrote: ‘Your POOR wives… my sympathy to them both… ear plugs for them!’

Another added: ‘I listened this morning and nearly spat my brew out laughing and now get to relive it all over again…absolute radio gold my friends.’

One listener penned ‘Dig in the ribs! Blimey I’m surprised she doesn’t sleep in a different bedroom, but you’d still be able to hear that snoring.’

Bolton-born broadcaster Kay has enjoyed a smooth start to his Radio 2 life, after replacing veteran Bruce, who helmed the BBC programme for 31 years, in May.

Bruce, 72, announced he was leaving the BBC in January and moved to Bauer’s Greatest Hits Radio in April to present a new mid-morning show from 10am to 1pm.
