Jewel’s Mom Embezzled More Than $100 Million From Her

Grammy-nominated artist Jewel has sold millions of records across the world, but according to the singer, her life’s earnings were depleted after her mother allegedly embezzled over $100 million from her.

During a recent appearance on the Verywell Mind podcast with Amy Morin, the singer made the startling revelation. “I didn’t really realize what my mom was until I was 30-something … I woke up and realized she embezzled all of my money — over $100 million,” Jewel explained.

“And then as I started investigating the truth about what my mom had told me in my life versus what was true, I had realized that pretty much everything that I had formed my reality off was fiction,” she continued.

“Having to go back as a 34-year-old and rework your psyche was not fun but so powerful,” Jewel, now 48, went on.

“Thirty-four years old, realize I’m $3 million in debt, realize my mom stole it, realize everything I thought my mom was, isn’t what she was, very difficult psychological thing to come to terms with,” she added.

It’s unclear if legal action was taken against Jewel’s mother over the alleged embezzlement.

The singer was born in Utah to Atz and Nedra Kilcher, as their second child. They later relocated to Alaska, though Jewel’s parents divorced early in her childhood. She live with her father afterwards.

Jewel has been relatively private about her upbringing in the past. However, when she has addressed it, she’s spoken positively.

“We lived far from town. We had to walk 2 miles (3.2 km) just to get to the saddle barn I was raised in,” she wrote on her official website. “No running water, no heat—we had a coal stove and an outhouse and we mainly lived off of what we could kill or can.”

“We picked berries and made jam. We caught fish to freeze and had gardens and cattle to live on,” the singer continued. “I rode horses every day in the summer beneath the Alaskan midnight sun. I loved it there.”

She also alluded to being estranged from her mother in her 2015 memoir Never Broken – Songs are Only Half the Story.

“I can’t tell you about the pain, and how my heart to this day screams to have a mom in my life,” she wrote. “But I know that it is not safe with her. Every day I miss having a mom. But I don’t miss Nedra.”

During the Verywell Mind podcast appearance, Jewel reflected on her parent’s divorce. She admitted to seeing her mother leave the family as a good thing. “My dad didn’t take us from my mom, he actually did a good thing ….[I] realized my mom left because she didn’t want to be a mom,” she said.
