While many people change their skincare routine and the way they dress as they age, one thing that is often overlooked is adjusting your makeup routine to suit your hair colour. Embracing naturally greying locks can look just as flattering as being blonde, auburn or brunette, though the shades that suit your complexion will change. A mature beauty expert has shared the best colour palettes to use for your eyes, lips, and cheeks to flatter your silver or grey hair.

While bright red and nude tones are universally known to suit almost any hair colour and complexion, makeup artist Kerry-Lou explained that this isn’t the case for those with silver or grey hair.

In a recent video on her YouTube channel, the mature beauty expert revealed her “favourite colours” to bring out the best in her short, silver hair.

She said: “We have plums, violets, pinks – they are all such flattering colours. Especially if you have silver or grey hair as I do.”

For her base makeup, Kerry-Lou used foundation and concealer to match her skin tone, but she made full use of brighter pigments for her eyes, cheeks and lips.

Cheeks

For a “youthful glow”, the makeup artist used a bright pink blush and fluffy brush to sweep the colour across her cheeks.

The exact product was the Bobbi Brown Powder Blush in the shade “Apricot”. In the video, Kerry-Lou lightly dusted it on the high points of her cheekbone and the apples for a natural-looking flush.

Bright rose colours or a pinky-peach shade are well-suited to grey hair, depending on your skin tone.

Darker complexions with warm or yellow undertones should go for a red or orange-based colour, and those with cool undertones should opt for a blue or pink-based blush.

Eyes

To brighten up her eyes, the beauty expert used a shadow palette with “nice soft colours” that complement silver-toned hair.

Starting with a light violet shade, she packed it onto her lid using a fluffy brush. In a plum shade which was a little darker, Kerry-Lou defined the crease of her eyelid with the same brush, blending it in the shape of an archway.

While many people opt for black eyeliner to add extra definition to the eyes, the mature makeup expert recommended using a mid-tone plum shade instead.

The purple shades go well with grey and silver hair because they work as a two-tone colour palette, as grey is an undertone of the colour purple.

Eyebrows

White and grey eyebrows are often seen as a sign of ageing caused by a reduction in the amount of melanin in the hair.

While brown, blonde, red and black eyebrow products are easy to come by, finding a shade to match silver brows is more difficult. But according to the beauty expert, you can still make brunette shades work.

In the video, she used a tinted eyebrow gel in a light brown shade to gently comb through the brow hairs.

Kerry-Lou said that using a tinted gel is ideal because it “glues” them in place, “covers the greys” and “shapes them” all at the same time – without looking unnatural.

Lips

The colour of your lipstick can transform your entire complexion, but choosing the wrong shade can also emphasise ageing concerns.

Instead of wearing dark tones to contrast the lightness of the hair, Kerry chose to accentuate it with a brighter pink shade.

Starting with a lip liner, she drew around the outline of her lips before filling it in with a matte lipstick shade, just a few tones darker than her natural flush.

Coral, geranium, vivid rose, and berry shades are best suited to ageing hair and complexions, though you should avoid sheened finishes as this can emphasise wrinkles.
