A man has stirred conversation online after revealing he returned his sister’s dream wedding gift.
Posting on Reddit’s Am I The Asshole? page, where people request perspectives on whether they’re in the wrong, he explained the situation.
When his younger sister Sarah got engaged, she asked the poster’s girlfriend of 10 years, Naomi, to be a bridesmaid. He stressed that this was totally unprompted and Sarah said she extended the invite as she was ‘grateful to Naomi’ for helping her when she was younger.
A few weeks later, Sarah posted on social media that she was holding a ‘bridesmaid proposals brunch’, which Naomi hadn’t been invited to.
‘Naomi was hurt but said she understood because she hadn’t expected the ask anyway,’ the man wrote.
Some months later when Sarah asked her sister-in-law to her bachelorette event and to get ready with the bridal party on the day of the wedding, Naomi gladly accepted – and even helped plan the hen weekend.
However, Sarah then went quiet about the plans, and the poster found out through his mum that the bachelorette party had taken place without his girlfriend.
‘Now I’m kind of pissed because Naomi was clearly very hurt at two invites and then being sort of ghosted,’ he said.
‘A week before the wedding Naomi texted Sarah and asked about getting ready and hair and makeup, and Sarah responds acting confused and basically tells her nicely to just come with me. Then I was really pissed.’
Having bought his sister her dream wedding present (an expensive baking mixer) ahead of the big day, the man said he ‘felt like being petty’ so ‘cut her a check instead and returned the mixer.’
Sarah had been expecting the gift, and once the wedding was done texted her sibling saying, ‘I don’t know how to ask this but what happened to the mixer?’
In response, he told her: ‘I didn’t know how to ask but what happened to treating my girlfriend like a freaking human being?’
This didn’t go down well.
The man’s family began angrily texting him, and despite attempts from Sarah to explain why Naomi was excluded (citing reasons like she ‘didn’t think she could attend’ and she ‘didn’t see a reason for her to come get ready’ with the bridal party as she was doing her own hair) tension remained.
The post continued: ‘My sister is still pissed at me and says I ruined her honeymoon period (she’s not on a trip) and some other really crappy stuff so I just hung up on her.
‘She also said that not giving the mixer was rude to her and her husband which is hilarious because my brother-in-law probably couldn’t figure out how to turn on the oven without neon flashing signs.’
Redditors were largely in support of the man, who was judged as ‘not the asshole’ when comments were aggregated.
‘I think it’s brilliant how you stood up for your girlfriend and your sister is lucky you got her a gift at all,’ said one person, while another added: ‘Your sister treated your girlfriend like garbage and didn’t deserve the expensive gift.’
A third commenter wrote: ‘There are so many layers of audacity in this story on the part of [his] sister, culminating in actually calling someone to ask why you didn’t get the gift you expected. What the hell is wrong with this woman?’
Some suggested that Sarah may have forgotten about her previous conversations with Naomi, yet others claimed she had used her sister-in-law for help and to ‘look good’ before ditching her when she had what she needed.
It’s not rare for a wedding to cause arguments among family, but this is one rift that may take a while to restore.
