Man BEGGED his girlfriend to cook as part of a 'sexist tradition'

Man slammed after revealing he BEGGED his girlfriend to cook for his family as part of a ‘sexist tradition’ so she can make a ‘good impression’

  • The man, from the US, took to Reddit’s Am I the A**hole forum to seek advice
  • He had asked his girlfriend to help the women in his family cook as is ‘tradition’
  • The Redditor claimed he wanted to ensure she makes a good ‘first impression’

A man has found himself in hot water after insisting his girlfriend cook for his extended family at their next gathering for the sake of ‘tradition.’

The ambivalent beau, believed to be from the US, turned to Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum for advice, desperate to know if he is in the wrong ‘begging’ his girlfriend ‘to uphold a sexist tradition just so she can make a good first impression.’

He explained that his relatives get together for ‘big family dinners every few months,’ for which they all convene at his great-grandfather’s estate.

‘Typically how this works is that the women go cook for the time they’re there and the men don’t. Which I am fully aware it’s sexist as hell,’ he wrote.

Elaborating further, the Redditor continued: ‘That being said I am one of the youngest people in family and my protests mean literally nothing.’

In the past, he recalls, whenever he’s ‘seen new [female] partners not cook, it’s gone bad. Like completely ostracized, not speaking, cattiness, rudeness etc.’

While his sweetheart was at first happy to accept an invitation to his family’s next big gathering, she changed her tune and was ‘understandably bothered’ after he told her about the ‘tradition’ – i.e. women cook while the men relax and socialize.

The man tried to assure her that joining his female relatives in the kitchen would not be a ‘permanent thing’ but was simply so that she can make the best first impression possible.

And he doubled down that he’s ‘only asking her to do this so that she can avoid bad treatment from the rest of the family.’

In turn, she shot back that the expectation is ‘unacceptable,’ adding that ‘if she has to do that she will not be going.’

He summarized the conundrum: ‘I’ve tried to find a compromise with her on this but she won’t budge and she’s p***ed at me.

‘She told me that if I think it’s acceptable to make her do this I’m just as bad as everyone else, while my point is that she needs to make a good first impression.’

Reddit overwhelmingly decided that the well-meaning bloke was indeed in the wrong – and dubbing him YTA – short for ‘You’re The A**hole.’

‘YTA, mainly because you seem to be very concerned with your girlfriend making a good first impression on your family, but not at all concerned with your family making a good first impression,’ one wrote.

The same commenter added, ‘It reads as though you care far more that your family approve of your choice than you do that she approves of your family. That’s pretty f**ked up and self-centered.’

Another shared an anecdote in which, upon introducing her then-boyfriend, now-husband to her family, he insisted on helping her grandma clean up afterward.

The comment describes how: ‘The men of the family didn’t even notice he was gone. And every single woman in my family absolutely adores my husband, and comments that he must treat me so well. They even tell my cousins, ‘You should get a boyfriend like him!”

‘YTA. So you disagree with it, but are you in the kitchen in the meantime?’ another fumed: ‘Have you ever tried to go in there and help provide the labor? Or are you only ‘not sexist’ to women you want to sleep with?’
