McVities makes major change to digestive biscuits this week and its divided fans

Whether you like to eat them as a mid-morning snack or prefer to tuck into them as a late night nibble, it’s no exaggeration that we’re a country of biscuit fans.

While some may opt for a classic custard cream or a crumbly cookie, one biscuit that’s ideal for any occasion is the humble digestive.

But despite its popularity, beloved biscuit brand McVities has revealed that it will be making some changes to its iconic snack.

McVities has announced that it will be launching a healthier digestive biscuit which contains 30 per cent less sugar and 50 per cent more fibre than a typical digestive.

The new recipe, which is called Wholesense Digestives, is set to hit store shelves later this week and will cost £1.59 for 300g.

After trialling the creation on hundreds of biscuit loves, the brand has ensured that the treats won’t break apart when dunked into a cup of tea.

Despite the change, McVities claims that the new recipe has the same “distinctive, salty-sweet flavour” as the traditional biscuit.

In biscuit manufacturers have previously attempted to make a healthier tea time snack and spent millions halving the saturated fat content in the biscuits in 2008 and 2009.

However, members of the public complained that the biscuits were too crumbly and McVities brought back the original recipe in 2013.

Speaking of the new development, David Titman, marketing director at McVitie's owner Pladis, explained: “It’s now even easier for shoppers to tuck into their biscuit tin favourites whether they are looking for an indulgent treat or something a little lighter.”

And for anyone still lusting after the classic version of the snack, rest assured normal digestive biscuits will still be available to buy.

McVities isn’t the only food brand switching things up in time for summer, however.

McDonald’s recently unveiled its brand new summer menu, featuring flavours inspired from Italy, Spain and Cyprus.

The fast food chain’s Taste of Italy Summer Menu touched down on 8 June and features mouthwatering meals including the new Italian Stack, which is a combination of two beef patties, mozzarella, crispy onions, tomato sauce, lettuce and a smooth cheese sauce.

An all-new Crispy Chicken Italiano is also on the first menu, and undoubtedly one for chicken lovers with a classic Italian twist.

Elsewhere, McDonald’s is also offering its customers the chance to tuck into some mozzarella dippers as well as a tiramisu-flavoured McFlurry.
