Meghan’s latest podcast episode was all about examining the labels “bimbo” and “dumb blonde”, and looking out how these are so often used against women to belittle and undermine them. Paris shared her experiences of being perceived as “dumb”, but so did Meghan – the Duchess revealed how she felt she was being praised for her beauty, and not her brains, on the US version of Deal or No Deal when she appeared on it decades ago.

Body language expert Judi James analysed Meghan’s way of speaking during the episode, as well as her reactions to Paris.

She said: “It’s an impressive and optimistic task for Meghan to be seeking sympathy for the famous, successful, beautiful and wealthy Paris Hilton, as well as her 2006 self during her ‘Briefcase’ days on TV during this podcast.

“But, her running theme on Archetypes does seem to be to share heartbreak and tears with spectacularly successful names.”

Judi noticed that there was a moment in the episode where Meghan is close to tears, so much so that her voice cracked.

She continued: “There is a point where Meghan is heard getting tearfully emotional about Paris, with her voice cracking in empathy as she talks about the ‘limiting’ experiences of being stuck with a ‘dumb blonde’ trope.”

Although Meghan is interviewing Paris, Judi noted that the Duchess talked a great deal about herself during the podcast episode.

The body language expert said: “The story is primarily Meghan’s though as she starts her podcast in her signature and hugely engaging-sounding storybook style.

“Her vocal range, her perfect enunciation, and her breathy techniques are used to reveal the tragedy of being so beautiful and yet knowing that she was ‘so much more’.

“She gasps in horror about her job being ‘solely about beauty’ and how it made her feel ‘not smart’.”

As for Paris, Judi explained that the heiress “defines herself with ‘I’m kind and shy and an Aquarius’, as well as being a ‘girls’ girl’.

“Both women were nervous about meeting, but Meghan takes an incredibly kind tone to the shy-but-so-high-profile Paris, telling her it is a ‘safe place’ for her.

“Meghan describes the heiress Paris’ experiences as ‘so sad’, and both women seem to come to a place of empathy via the shared experience of being so utterly beautiful people that people assumed they might be dumb.”

While discussing the word “bimbo”, Meghan also mentioned her daughter, Lilibet.

The Duchess said: “I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on this idea because when I hear the word bimbo, I have a very negative connotation to it.

“I don’t see that as an aspirational thing for a woman, I want our daughters to aspire to be slightly higher.

“I want my Lili to want to be educated and want to be smart and to pride herself on those things.”

It seemed the Duchess was saying that she would want her one-year-old daughter to care more – and be proud – of her intelligence, rather than her looks.

Speaking about Deal or No Deal, Meghan shared: “Before the tapings of the show, all the girls, we would line up and there were different stations for having your lashes, put on, or your extensions, put in, or the padding in your bra.

“We were even given spray-tan vouchers each week because there was a very cookie cutter idea of precisely what we should look like. It was solely about beauty and not necessarily about brains.

“And when I look back at that time I will never never forget this one detail because moments before we’d get on stage, there was a woman who ran the show and she would be there backstage and I can still hear her. She couldn’t properly pronounce my last name at the time, and I knew who she was talking to because she would go, ‘Markell suck it in, Markell suck it in’.”

Meghan continued: “I ended up quitting the show. Like I said, I was thankful for the job but not for how it made me feel, which was not smart.

“And by the way, I was surrounded by smart women on that stage with me, but that wasn’t the focus of why we were there and I would end up leaving with this pit in my stomach, knowing that I was so much more than what was being objectified on the stage.”
