This summer make sure your doors are properly locked, as a young woman has recently learned her “mad old girl” neighbour has been entering into her home in order to tidy up without her knowledge.
In a Reddit post, the woman explained that she has just gotten back from travelling abroad only to discover she had lost her house key.
After frantically calling a locksmith and waiting for him to install a new lock, the woman’s neighbour called over the fence: “Why didn’t you just ask for the spare key?”
That was when the woman discovered that not only did her elderly neighbour have a key to her home, but the pensioner had been entering the woman’s home when no one was around in order to clean and water her plants.
The woman wrote: “I’ve lived in my house for four years and I have just found out that my neighbour, who I have only ever had passing pleasantries with, still has a spare key that the previous owners gave her over 15 years ago!”
The woman added that not only was this a complete shock to her, but that her elderly neighbour then cheekily asked for a new key to the woman’s home once the locksmith was done.
She wrote: “[The neighbour] asked if I was planning to give her a new spare. I said no and that I’d be fine with just my parents having one”
According to the post, the neighbour replied: ”Well I won’t be able to water your plants when you’re away I suppose”
The young woman continued: “So it turns out the mad old girl has been letting herself into my house when I’m away to water my plants and tidy up without me knowing for four bloody years! She did it for the previous owners and just didn’t stop once they moved!”
While the woman was more amused than alarmed by her neighbour’s confession, the woman finished her post by advising to always change your locks when you move or “a pensioner might be coming in and doing your dusting while you’re away.”
The bemused woman decided to share her strange story to Reddit’s Casual UK forum, where it has since gone viral who thousands of views and is now one of the forum’s most popular posts of the year.
Many commentators have found the story very funny, with many Brits asking if the woman’s neighbour would mind “popping round” to clean their own homes. One user asked: “Can I have your neighbour? I’d love it if mine came and did free dusting.”
The woman replied: “She might be coming to you too! You’d never know! I’m questioning everything now. Did I really eat the last biscuit in the pack or has grandma break-in been helping herself to the custard creams?!”
Other Brits posted to ask if the elderly neighbour was at least doing a good job at cleaning while breaking and entering into her home. The woman replied: “My fern died! She’s not even watering the plants well!”
The woman added: “I think [the neighbour is] just coming in for a ‘day out’ and watching my TV. I’m an unwitting senior centre!”
However, some people have not found the story as hilarious as other users. One person wrote: “Yep that’s so creepy! She obviously meant no harm but how do you not know someone is entering your house for 4 years?”
The woman replied: “She must be like a stealth ninja…I keep the place clean, so when I come home and it’s still clean I don’t question it. I am now questioning why she feels the need to come and reclean my cleaning!”
