DEAR DEIDRE: MY partner’s about to retire and I’m dreading it.
I actively avoid spending time with him now.
I’m 58, and my partner’s 64. We started dating last year.
I had been on my own for a while before meeting him and generally speaking I am happy in my own company.
To be honest, my partner was the best of a bad bunch when it came to something closer than friendship.
At the moment, we spend a couple of nights together a week – at the most.

But the idea of having to spend every day with him has made me realise that I can’t carry on with this charade.
How do I tell him that it’s over without hurting him?
