Sir Nick Faldo has questioned Rory McIlroy’s decision to give a live interview during his first round at The Masters.
The current world No.2, aiming to end a seven-year drought at the majors, wore a microphone on Thursday as he began his latest attempt to win the green jacket for the first time in his illustrious career.
McIlroy stunned viewers when he talked them through his approach to the ninth hole, revealing he ‘eased off’ on his drive, before breaking down the line of a key putt on the way to making a creditable par.
The 33-year-old’s decision to ‘walk and talk’ caused a mixed reaction, with two-time Augusta winner Faldo unsure of the merits.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘Every interview I’ve done this week is all about giving 100% concentration to yourself and the task at hand, so why?’
England cricketer Stuart Broad, however, a keen golfer himself, was delighted to see McIlroy take such an innovative approach.
In response to Faldo, he said: ‘It grows the game of golf and fantastic insight. Rory as achieved so much maybe getting people interested in golf is more important to him now than sole focus on winning?
That group included defending champion Scottie Scheffler, former Open champion Shane Lowry and 2013 winner Adam Scott, as well as US Amateur champion Sam Bennett.
Tiger Woods faced an uphill battle to avoid missing the cut for the first time as a professional after an opening 74.
