Online tool helps you check health risks at your summer holiday destination | The Sun

SUMMER holidays are well and truly in full swing with millions of Brits planning to jet off to sunnier climates.

If you're going abroad, it's important to know the potential health risks that might come with your destination.

Luckily a handy online tool tells you exactly what vaccinations you could need and what illnesses you could be at risk of in each country.

The Boots quick check tool allows you to select your destination.

For example, if you're off to sunny Spain this year, all you need to do is choose it from the drop-down menu and click finish.

You will then be provided with a risk summary for your trip.

For Spain, the team said there would be 'no malaria risk' so you wouldn't need malaria prevention medication.

However it does state that you may need vaccinations for some diseases depending on your personal details, activities and the length of your trip.

This could include diphtheria, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rabies, rubella and tetanus.

In order to check what you would need, you can book a free personalised risk assessment which will help you decide.

RISK AWARE

For example, you might need certain vaccines if you are spending time in the wild – in comparison to if you are staying in an all inclusive resort.

Boots chief pharmacist, Marc Donovan said: "When you travel abroad you may be exposed to viruses and diseases you haven't come across before, but there are vaccinations and other medicines that can help protect you.

"You should also check the malaria risk of the country you’re travelling to.

"Malaria is a serious infection and can be life-threatening but is preventable."

CHECK LIST

While you should always check what jabs you might need for the country you are visiting, Marc said it's also worth checking Covid testing requirements.

He added: "It’s important to stay up to date on relevant Covid-19 testing requirements.

"Popular locations such as Spain, still require either a vaccination, negative test, or confirmation you’ve recovered from Covid-19 in the last 6 months.

"If you start to experience any Covid-19 symptoms it is always wise to take a test before you travel too, as the UK government recommends not flying if you have tested positive."

If you're travelling long-haul, you should also be aware that you might experience jet lag.

“If you are travelling to a destination far away in a different time zone – like the Americas – you might be at risk of jet lag.

"Make sure you drink plenty of water, keep active by regularly stretching and walking around the cabin and try to sleep if it's night time at your destination," Marc added.
