Parents wanted to change baby’s name – but mum-in-law had already tattooed it

Choosing a name for their baby is a huge deal for most parents.

So you can excuse anyone for changing their mind regarding what to call their newborn before it's finally made official.

But one family found themselves in a tricky situation when the mum and dad had a "change of heart" over what the little one would be known as, only to discover the mother-in-law had already tattooed it on her arm.

Writing on Mumsnet, the mum described the "nightmare" situation, adding that she "feels awful" about her in-law's premature inking, reports The Mirror.

However, she explained that both she and her partner are determined to stick to their guns over what to name their tiny son.

In a post titled 'MIL tattooed DS's name' she wrote: "We have just had a baby two weeks ago, MIL immediately tattooed baby boy's name on her arm.

"However, we have since had a change of heart. What a nightmare! We didn't ask her to or even know she was doing it.

"It's obviously really sweet of her though, but now I feel awful. How on Earth do we handle this?"

She added that she'd tried talking herself into keeping the original name, but "it just doesn't sit right anymore."

The post received more than 100 responses from other Mumsnet users, with one suggesting: "Can you use that as the middle name so she can just add the 'new' first name to the front?"

Another said: "It's really not your problem, to be honest. You're entirely within your rights to change your minds as it's still very early days and you're only getting to know him."

A third commented: "Oh yikes. Perhaps she should have waited until you registered the baby."

But some were less than helpful and just called the mother-in-law "daft".

"She could have waited," they added. "He's your son, so if you prefer a different name then go for it."
