Primark fans divided as ‘traumatising’ noughties top is back on sale

Fashionistas think that they’ve accidentally fallen into a time warp after spotting Primark’s latest offering.

The cheap fashion brand, who have recently upset customers by increasing their prices, are bringing back sequin butterfly tops, and their customers can’t decide if they’re excited for the launch or not.

The brand gave their followers a sneak peek of the new release in a short video uploaded to their TikTok account, which they captioned: "psst… coming soon."

The video showed two sequinned butterfly tops in purple and pink hanging up, looking ready to hit shelves.

The tops both feature identical black spaghetti straps and look like they tie up at the back.

The reaction to the post in the comment section was somewhat mixed.

One user joked: “did I just wake up in 2002?”

Another said that the top had given her a “trauma flashback” to “being too fat to wear these when they were first in fashion.”

But, fortunately for Primark, some followers were actually excited by the announcement, however, and branded the look “nostalgic.”

The top is certainly a callback to the early 2000s and many fashionistas credit superstar Mariah Carey with popularising the look.

Mariah rocked a beaded version of the top in 2000 at the VH1 Divas Live Concert – and the outfit inspired a thousand imitators.

Eventually the fashion world moved on, but there have been clues that the look had been set to make a surprise comeback in 2023.

Levitating singer Dua Lipa rocked a denim version of the butterfly design on her Instagram account last year, while up and coming Disney star Olivia Rodrigo modelled a more traditional version of the look.

Olivia, whose first album Sour soared to the top of the charts last year, rocked a bright blue and green sequined butterfly top on her Instagram.

Like Mariah Carey before her, the pop icon inspired thousands of young girls to copy the look and they rushed to second hand shops and resale sites to try and find knock-offs.

But it looks like they won’t have to beg, borrow and steal from older siblings and cousins to imitate the early 2000s look anymore, as Primark has come to their rescue.

It’s not clear when the top will actually be released, but Primark has said that it will be “very soon.”
