Harry, Meghan, William and Kate thank the crowds in Windsor
Meghan Markle was looking to Prince Harry for “reassurance” when they reunited with Princess Kate and Prince William after the death of Queen Elizabeth, according to body language experts.
The previously nicknamed ‘Fab Four’ were spotted in September greeting members of the public outside Windsor Castle in the lead-up to the late monarch’s funeral.
Body language experts Bedros Akkelian and David Stephens have analysed footage from the event and said Harry appeared “protective” of Meghan during the public outing.
In their deep dive video, Akkelian explained: “The way Harry is holding Meghan’s hand is a very leading dominant way to hold someone’s hand.”
He added: “It’s also protective because it’s his hand over hers. So it’s ‘I’m protecting, I’m leading, I’m comforting’.”
Akkelian said Meghan was “taking a lot of cues” from William and Kate as she kept glancing at the royal couple.
He said: “The way I intercept that is that she is looking for guidance here. She seems a little thrown off, and those confirmation glances are ‘okay what are we doing, is this good? Are we doing this? Or are we doing that?’.”
This was the last time Meghan has faced Kate for a public outing and it has been claimed that both royal women found the meeting “difficult”.
In his new book Our King: Charles III, author Robert Jobson wrote that Kate said that the walkout was “one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do.”
However, a source has told People that Harry and Meghan also had similar difficulties, saying: “That’s the longest they had ever been away from the kids, and then on top of it, knowing what’s being said out there — it was very difficult.”
Akkelian continued to analyse and said Meghan was “very much following” Harry due to her body language, which body language expert David agreed with.
He said: “Oh absolutely. I think that she is unsure of the situation, you do get those confirmation glances. She’s looking to Harry for reassurance, she’s looking potentially to Kate and William for the lead.”
Stephens said Meghan appeared to be “trying to find her place in this royal setting” and may have also appeared worried about the crowd’s reaction as they walked up to greet the public.
He said: “The other thing to think about of course is that they are about to go ahead and greet crowds of well-wishers. Given some of the press she has had, that may well be playing on her as well in terms of ‘how will I be received’ and what sort of reception.
“I do think you see that as they are walking across towards the crowd. In particular, you see her looking down and she seems to be really lacking some confidence.”

Akkelian said that when people look down at the ground constantly it is a sign of an “inner monologue” in their head, which also showed that Meghan “was trying to figure out what her place was”.
He then spoke about Harry’s body language, commenting: “Right at the beginning, coming out of the car, even Harry himself is not sure how he and Meghan are going to be received here.
“There’s a lot of controversy with their place within the family, and I think a part of him is uncomfortable, not sure, and that’s a lot what we’re seeing here with both Harry and Meghan.”
Stephens pointed out: “As Meghan is walking across, you see a series of really interesting behaviours and positioning of Harry.”
While watching the royals get out of car, he said Kate appeared confident, but Meghan waits behind the three other royals as they greet an official.
He said: “You can see straight away that Harry’s concern is for Meghan and where is she going to fit in, and what’s going to happen with her.”
Stephens said William “does the right thing” and turns around to gesture to Meghan, in order to make room for her to greet the official.
He then said Meghan “steps right back” after greeting the official as Harry “shuffled around” and walked around the group in order to be next to the Duchess to be “comforting”.
Stephens said: “I think both William and Kate were making an attempt to fit Harry back into wherever he was wanting to go, but it is this really awkward moment of Harry going ‘it’s all about supporting Meghan’, and so he has to sort of move positions.”
