The future Princess of Wales was born on July 1, 1961, as The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer. After her father assumed his Earldom, she was known as Lady Diana Spencer until her marriage to the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, in 1981. As a member of the Royal Family and after her divorce in 1996, Princess Diana was an influential global figure, and her efforts promoted important issues like AIDS and landmines to the forefront.
