Reason behind Love Islands Jacques and Gemmas break up unveiled by close pal

Love Islandcertainly knows how to bring the drama. This year singletonGemma Owensaw her exJacques O'Neillenter the villa as a bombshell that certainly caused a stir amongst the contestants – and herself.

The pair, who dated for some time in 2020, appeared to put their relationship behind them and currently Gemma, 19, is coupled up withDavide Sanclimentiand Jacques, 23, withPaige Thorne .

On Tuesday’s episode of the dating show, Paige, 24, and Jacques spent a night in the hideaway after previously admitting that theyenjoyed some time in a “tent” in bedthe night before.

While Gemma and Jacques have moved on from their romance of a few years ago, the rugby player’s new role may have caused them to split.

Reports suggest that the hunk split withMichael Owen’s daughter after taking up a spot in Super League club, Castleford Tigers.

It forced the couple into a long-distance relationship as they lived 75 miles apart – a two-hour drive – between Leeds and Cheshire.

A pal of Jacques’ toldThe Sun: “Jacques was really focussed on his rugby career. Even though he was in a relationship with Gemma, he didn't want to let that stop him from taking the chance to play for Leeds.

“He moved two hours away from where she lives in Cheshire. Things between them went downhill pretty quickly while trying long-distance. They didn't last long after that.”

The pair’s relationship ended in 2020 and while some viewers have suggested the rugby ace is now trying to win his ex back, his pal explained that this is not the case.

“Jacques wouldn’t dare get back with Gemma because all the rugby boys would give him too much stick.”

This comes as Jacques’ current pair on the show Paige revealed how much she likes him: “I had such a good night with Jacques, so yeah, I'm happy this morning. For me, personally, the next guy could walk in, 10/10, be my type, but I'm not even interested really in wanting to get to know him.

"I feel what I already have with Jacques is more than enough, more than enough."

Meanwhile, a new bombshell entered the villa on Tuesday and is sure to turn some heads.

Antigoni Buxton, is entering the villa as a surprise, and is the daughter of famous celebrity chef Tonia Buxton.

Talking in an interview prior to her entrance, Antigoni, 26, who is a singer from London, said of her decision to join: "I’ve been single for almost a year and a half and for the whole of the last year my goal has been to have as many different experiences as possible.

"I really just want to say ‘yes’ to things. Why not? It’ll be fun. I’m a Cypriot girl and I love being in the sun. I’ve got nothing to lose!"
