SAG Awards’ biggest moments over the years including Winona Ryder breaking the internet

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is just shy of turning 30. This year the ceremony returned for the 29th time, and again recognised the many outstanding performances in movie and prime time television.

But while the stars looked glam and made their best acceptance speeches, let’s take a look at some of the major moments the SAG awards have given us to date.

From the time Carrie Fisher presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to her mother, Debbie Reynolds, to when Leo DiCaprio finally won something, there’s been plenty of highlights throughout the years.

When Morgan Freeman called out an audience member during his acceptance speech

Icon

was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for his contributions to the entertainment industry, and rightly so.

But during his acceptance speech (in which he was casually wearing a baseball cap to accept such a prestigious award) he also called out an audience member for being on their phone while he was talking. Ouch.

When Winona Ryder broke the internet

You couldn’t not love Winona Ryder even if you tried. But in 2017, she literally broke the internet with her facial expressions during her Stranger Things costar David Harbour’s acceptance speech.

One Twitter user even joked that deserved a SAG Award just “for her emotional journey on stage.”

The women in the #MeToo movement said ‘time’s up’

The 2018 SAG Awards saw Marisa Tomei and Rosanna Arquette thank the women who had spoken out on the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements during their presenting duties for Best Actress in a Television Movie or Limited Series.

In 2017, Arquette was one of the first women to open up about Harvey Weinstein.

Viola Davis kept up her winning streak

In 2017, Davis picked up her 5th SAG award for Best Supporting Actress for the film Fences. The win made her the first African-American actress and first woman of colour to win five times.

Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an award

Back in 2016 – and after being nominated for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role 8 times – Leonardo DiCaprio finally came out on top.

The Titanic star won the award for his film The Revenant, in which he portrays fur trapper Hugh Glass, who, in 1823, guides Captain Andrew Henry’s trappers through the territory of the present-day Dakotas.

Carrie Fisher got to present her mum with a Lifetime Achievement Award

When Carrie Fisher presented her mum, Debbie Reynolds with the big award in 2015, she joked: “I'm very close to this year's Lifetime Achievement Award honouree.”

Looking back now, the moment is very bittersweet, as both women died one day apart the following year.

Nicole Kidman got candid about ageing in Hollywood

Nicole Kidman was celebrating 50 years around the sun in 2018. That year, she accepted the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV, Movie or Limited series for her role in Big Little Lies.

During her speech, she got real about ageing in Hollywood, saying: “How wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old."

Sterling K. Brown made history

Sterling K. Brown won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role in This Is Us back in 2018. The achievement made him the first Black actor to ever win a SAG award in his category.

Hollywood gave Rita Moreno a standing ovation

Credit where credit was due back in 2018, as the SAG award audience gave West Side Story Actress Rita Moreno a standing ovation as she presented Morgan Freeman with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson presented together

Another sweet mother-daughter duo moment, but this time from Goldie Hawn and her daughter, Kate Hudson. The pair teamed up to present the This Is Us cast with the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2018.

Idris Elba made history

The Luther star became the first male actor in the history of the SAG awards to win two individual awards in one night.

In 2016, he was presented with Best Male Actor in a Television, Movie or Miniseries for Luther and Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Beasts of No Nation.

Betty White cracked the audience up

When the late great Betty White accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 at the age of 88, she made plenty of the audience members laugh by cheekily joking about sleeping with some of the actors in the crowd.

2018 was all about women

It’s tradition for the SAG awards to kick off with different actors sharing their individual stories about their careers. However, in 2018, it was an all-women ensemble, with Allison Janney, Tracee Ellis Ross, Millie Bobby Brown and Kristen Bell all being picked for the opening.

A refreshing moment.
