THEY'RE back! The biggest names in golf come out to play again at the Scottish Open, hoping to show they are in prime form ahead of next week’s Open Championship at Hoylake.
Eight of the top ten in the world rankings will be in action at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, with only Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith keeping their powder dry.
And it promises to be a real test, with winds of up to 30mph expected to lash the Scottish course on at least three of the four days.
That suggests Xander Schauffele’s winning score of seven under par last year is unlikely to be bettered. So you want real scrappers, preferably with some local knowledge.
Schauffele seems to fit the bill, and he did us a favour after being recommended at 20-1 last year.
But he arrived in much better form a year ago. He has not managed to win again in the last 12 months, and he has blown plenty of good chances along the way.
World No1 Scottie Scheffler is on a ridiculous streak, with nothing worse than a share of 12th place in his last EIGHTEEN starts.
Scheffler’s last six results are T5-T2-T3-3-3-T4, with two of those podium finishes coming in Majors, So you discount him at your peril.
But his supporters got their fingers burned here last year when he missed the cut at five over par, and his incredible run of form has yielded only two wins. So odds of 7-1 are not over-generous, and there are more tempting alternatives…..

Scottish Open tips
English golfers have prospered since the Renaissance Club became the long term venue for the Scottish Open four years ago.
And it would be no surprise to see one of the southern raiders take the spoils again.
Aaron Rai beat fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood in a play-off in 2020, and Matt Fitzpatrick lost out to Min Woo Lee in another play-off a year later, while Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick both made the top six last year.
That trio will all have their supporters, with Tyrrell Hatton and Justin Rose bolstering the English challenge.
I like Fleetwood’s chances of providing us with another 20-1 winner, while Rai looks good each way value at 66-1 – especially after a third place and a tied ninth in his last three starts.
Lee has been on my Hoylake short list since his share of fifth at the US Open. He is also worth an interest this week at 33-1, along with the player who won that Major last month, Wyndham Clark.

Clark is a 40-1 shot, and is a much better player than when he made an encouraging Scottish Open debut last year, finishing tied 16th.
Ryan Fox seems to love the feel of sandy soil under his feet. Even though the Renaissance Club is not a true links, it is close enough to the real thing to make Fox’s 66-1 quote look pretty appealing.
The best bet among the rank outsiders could be Brandon Wu, at 150-1.
He was only just inside the top 300 in the world rankings when he finished in the top six a year ago, and is now up to 84th – with power to add.
And it is impossible not to mention Rory McIlroy, who is 9-1 second favourite behind Scheffler. But he has not shown much of a liking for the course in three previous trips, so those odds look way too short.
With the golfing focus switching to the UK for the next two weeks, the US alternative is the weakly-contested Barbasol Championship in Kentucky.
The outcome of that event is always tough to predict. But 25-1 shot Peter Kuest is a PGA Tour rookie heading the right way, while Chad Ramey has also turned in some decent performances recently, and is available at twice those odds.
