Secret heartbreak that inspired Strictly’s Jayde Adams to insist she was paired with a woman

Strictly Come DancingstarJayde Adamsleft fans in tears over the weekend as she and partner Karen Hauerperformed a moving piece to Wind Beneath My Wings.

The comedian, 37, who made history as the first female same sex pairing on the BBC show, dedicated the performance to her late sister Jenna who passed away in 2011.

She told the judges that the pair used to dance to the song when they were younger and on Jenna’s death she said: “I didn’t just lose my sister, I lost my best friend, I lost my dance partner.”

Jayde’s sister is also the reason why she insisted on a same sex pairing during her time on the Strictly dance floor.

Ahead of the Strictly launch, the comedian explained her reason for insisting on dancing with a female on the show.

She toldThe Sun: “The last time I danced was actually with my sister . . . so this felt really natural for me.”

Jayde added said: “I followed her around for my whole life, followed her lead, and when she died I had to do it all by myself.

“Losing my sister wasn’t about freestyle disco-dancing, It was about losing my sister I grew up with.”

Jenna was just 23 years old when she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour after suffering a seizure, and six years later, in 2011, she tragically passed away.

Jayde recently bought a house in the Bedminster area of Bristol and explained the memories it conjured for her: “Coming back here, it was a huge portion of our life together. You forget all of that as you get older.

“I feel really thankful about the sort of life that I’ve had because, without it, I just wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing.”

Her Strictly partner Karen, 40, spoke out about the pairing too: Karen said: “I’ve danced with a lot of male dancers, but it’s finding what works for them. This is more natural.

“It is female empowerment for me to be dancing with Jayde. I feel the most comfortable because there is that friendship. We are girls and we talk about everything. We cry together, we laugh together.

We share so many things. When it comes to the dancing we are able to put that emotion into it,” she toldThe Sun.

Before the pair’s performance last week at the Attitude awards, Karen added: “This week we have cried every single day.

“It is very emotional and special. This song is especially close to her heart and dedicated to her sister.”
