Neighbours will feature several incredible returns over the final few weeks, but no one will be prepared for the drama Mal Kennedy (Benjamin McNair) is about to bring with him.
Susan (Jackie Woodburne) and Karl (Alan Fletcher) are beyond shocked when Mal shows up without warning from the UK. Something is amiss and they immediately sense his awkwardness over what he’s not saying. He confesses there’s something he needs to tell them, but how they’ll handle it is anyone’s guess.
He discloses a secret, but it’s not the secret. He’s not sure they’re ready to handle the startling truth. But Karl and Susan know their son, they’re not adverse to digging when they must.s
In the absolute plot twist to end all plot twists, his mystery becomes clear when Izzie Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaite) arrives on scene to visit her boyfriend – Mal. He reassures her that he is about to let his parents in on the fact that they are now together and she’s in town to see that it’s done. So yup, that’s Mal shacked up with the woman who temporarily destroyed his parent’s marriage, his former step-mum, the mother of his sister. This has all got a bit weird.
Mal makes Izzy promise to keep hidden until he’s had the chance to break this monumental news to his family. But it’s not an easy one for him to do and he ums and ahs about how to go about it. Izzy is not one to do what she’s told and of course she rocks up in Erinsborough without the heads up from Mal that he’s done what he promised.
She turns up on the Kennedys’ doorstep assuming Mal has bitten the bullet. He hasn’t, and absolute chaos ensues.
Scenes air from Monday July 11 on Channel 5.
