Smokers get extra week off work as a result of ciggie breaks, study finds

Smokers are getting up to an extra week off work thanks to cigarette breaks, a recent study has revealed.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed 52% of smokers take cheeky ciggie breaks several times a day, and all those minutes add up.

Some people admit they can spend as long as 20 minutes outside having a smoke.

It may not sound like a big deal to some, but when you add all that time together, smokers end up getting a lot of time away from their desks.

All in all it can lead to them spending 39 hours on cigarette breaks throughout the whole year.

This means they could be getting an extra week off work just by having a ciggie, as it works out as six days off a year.

It's said around 6.6million people in the United Kingdom smoke or vape – so a lot of people are bagging time off through the habit.

Men on average smoke more than women, as 15% of men and 12% of women do it regularly.

According to the recent report, Generation Z smoke the most closely followed by the baby boomers.

In contrast, millennials smoke the least, so the anti-smoking campaigns seen in the '80s and '90s seem to have made an impression.

ONS research also noted residents in Belfast and Southampton are likely to swerve work to smoke the most.

Meanwhile, people over the age of 60 were said to most likely to have the will power to give up smoking.

Haypp Head of External Affairs, Markus Lindblad, said after following UK government guidance, those who reduce their consumption of ciggies are likely to give up eventually.

He told Yahoo News: "Particularly if they are using licensed nicotine-containing product alternatives.

"The national harm reduction strategy, where the switch to alternative, less harmful, nicotine products such as nicotine pouches is encouraged, has been key to the UK being one of the most successful countries in Europe in reducing the number of smokers."
