Sydney has been swallowed by fog on Saturday morning, with the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House almost invisible.

Weatherzone meteorologist Aline Ribeiro said a high-pressure system, mixed with low temperatures and light winds was behind the fog, which is expected to lift around noon.

The city is expected to experience a top of 22 degrees and partly cloudy skies on Saturday.

Ribeiro said the fog cloud will return overnight and could cover the western suburbs and the city on Sunday morning as well. Fog was very common this time of year with cooler temperatures and light winds, Ribeiro said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a road warning for motorists, with the fog making driving dangerous in all Sydney suburbs. The bureau advised drivers to take extreme care.

The fog has also impacted some ferry services.

Commuters are advised to allow plenty of travel time due to some impacted services.

Sydney – the country’s second wettest capital city – has also had two weeks without rain for the first time in two years.

Weatherzone noted that although there were some rain droplets on Thursday in some Sydney suburbs, it wasn’t enough to register at the Observatory Hill weather station, where official records for Sydney are kept. This means that Sydney has been rain-free since May 20.

The city’s previous no-rain streak was 13 days in from June 6, 2022 to June 19, 2022.

The weather agency said that Sydney has recorded 663.6mm of rain this year so far, which is 59.9mm above the average. But this could all change with a looming El Nino weather pattern that will bring warmer and drier conditions later this year.

More to come.
