The butterfly bob is the haircut to ask for this autumn – heres everything you need to know

In case you haven’t heard, bobs are big beauty news at the moment.

We’ve seen no end of celebrities swap their long lengths for shorter styles recently, from Emma Stone and Vogue Williams to Louise Redknapp and Michelle Keegan. And one style in particular is trending at the moment – the ‘butterfly bob’.

With a rise in both Google and TikTok searches, this term refers to an especially bouncy, ‘Hollywood glam’ haircut that ends just above the shoulders, recently seen on the likes of Zendaya and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega. It’s autumn’s version of the long, layered butterfly haircut that celebs like Jennifer Lopez were seen sporting earlier this year.

Fancy giving this style a go yourself this season? We’ve asked the experts everything you need to know before going for the chop…

What is a butterfly bob?

“The butterfly bob is a more relaxed and glamorous version of the traditional bob,” says celebrity hairstylist and colour specialist Limoz Logli, who runs his own eponymous salon in London’s exclusive Chelsea area. “The hair is specifically layered to create bounce and movement, and it also provides a minimalistic yet well-defined look.

“The name ‘butterfly bob’ comes from the shorter layers at the front of the hair, which resemble butterfly wings,” he adds.

What to ask for in the salon to get a butterfly bob

“To get this look in the salon, ask your stylist to cut heavy layers with shorter pieces around the front to delicately frame the face,” suggests Limoz. Or, of course, simply screenshot this page to show your hairdresser!

Don’t forget, however, that it’s important to discuss any potential new hairstyle with your stylist beforehand, to ensure that it’s right for your hair type, face shape and lifestyle.

Who would the butterfly bob suit – and who should avoid it?

“This style suits various hair textures and face shapes, but the cut needs to be adapted to complement each person,” say the experts at London’s Top One salon.

“For an oval face shape, allow the layers to flow and sweep away from the face, while with a heart-shaped face, chin-length curls can create fullness around the jawline, bringing balance and symmetry.”

“With thick and coarse hair, the ‘butterfly wing’ effect can be more challenging, but certainly not off limits,” they add. “The key is to keep the layers long enough to allow room for shrinkage.”

How do you style the butterfly bob?

“Heated rollers or the Dyson AirWrap are great tools for styling this look at home,” says Limoz.

These £60 rollers get the thumbs up from OK!’s deputy style director Zoe, while this £70 hair tool has been called a great dupe for the pricey AirWrap.

When it comes to what styling products to use, this will depend on your hair type, explains Limoz. “If you have frizzy hair you need to apply a product that controls that, or if you have fine hair you need to add more volume in order to create movement.”
