THE GREEN GUIDE: How sustainable is you wardrobe?

THE GREEN GUIDE: How sustainable is you wardrobe? Jessica Carroll challenges fashion’s eco credentials

WHAT’S THE STORY?

Adidas x Parley (a global nonprofit organisation focusing on the protection of oceans) has been a powerful collaboration since 2015.

All trainers are made with 50 per cent recycled plastic, supposedly collected from beaches and coastal communities.

The goal is to stop any plastic reaching the sea. Last year, Adidas and Parley made almost 27 million pairs of shoes containing ‘ocean’ plastic – production on that scale sounds like fast fashion to us.

WHY SHOULDN’T I BUY?

Misrepresentation. In 2022, Channel 4’s Dispatches discovered that the plastic recycled for these trainers actually came from water bottles in hotels, rather than the ocean. Parley’s reliance upon these businesses to supply bottles for their shoes was encouraging the creation of more plastic waste rather than reducing it.

In 2022 alone, 13,364 beach clean-ups were organised by the organisation and its volunteers.
