TikTok couples are sharing how they split household chores

When your mum asked you to do the dishes as a kid, you most likely tried to think of every excuse you could, before reluctantly grabbing a sponge.

Back then, it hadn’t quite dawned on you that becoming a grown up meant doing chores like this – and then some – for yourself, every single day.

Isn’t adulting fun?

And if you’re in a relationship, you’ve most likely battled with your significant other over these domestic tasks.

Who’s doing the laundry? Who is changing the bedding? And who is taking those overflowing bins out?

Historically of course, the burden of chores and household tasks has fallen disproportionately on women, and this inequality can become a big source of tension.

But even now, women still take on the majority of household chores. In fact, one study found that women are more likely to do chores first, because they ‘see mess differently to men.’ Hmm.

But dividing up these tasks equally is an important part of every relationship. – with 53% of couples saying it is as important, or more important, than sex in their relationship.

And now, couples on TikTok are taking to the platform to share how they divide up household tasks.

And before you take a big sigh, we have some good news. It seems that, for these couples at least, equality is winning.

Dancing duo Austin and Marideth Telenko, aka Cost n’ Mayor, explained how they divide those mundane jobs. ‘I do all of the laundry,’ said Austin. ‘I do all of the grocery plans and dinners,’ added Marideth. ‘But I do breakfast,’ included Austin.

‘I do all the family finances, and you do all of our business finances,’ she adds, pointing at her husband.

‘I take the trash out,’ said Austin. ‘And I don’t help with that at all,’ says Marideth. Hard relate.

Hunter and Devin Cordle, also explained how their chores are evenly split.

‘Hunter washes the sheets and I made the bed. We split the dishes, probably 50/50,’ said Devin.

Hunter also chipped in: ‘I do most of the grocery shopping.’

The pair explained that they also have an agreement that Devin cleans their child’s playroom, while Hunter does the laundry. ‘We shook on it,’ adds Hunter.
