One of the latest trends to take over TikTok is the idea of ‘beige flags’ – defined as something about someone that is off-putting but not a total turn off, and not as bad as a ‘red flag’.
According to social media users, these could include always saying ‘funny story’ before sharing an amusing anecdote, cutting your food into bizarrely small pieces, or liking pineapple on pizza.
In other words, beige flags are behaviours that are considered slightly out of the ordinary, that leave people scratching their heads. And the term has taken the internet by storm, with searches for the term recently skyrocketing by 479 per cent on TikTok over a 24-hour time period.
While some relationship experts have warned that overuse of the term can make people overcautious when dating, others say it can be worth identifying your own.
Relationship and sex expert Charlotte Johnson, who says a beige flag ‘typically refers to a warning sign or concern that may not be as serious as a red flag but still warrants attention and consideration’, has partnered astrologer Inbaal Honigman to discuss what your beige flags may be – based on your star sign.
The latest trend in dating is the concept of ‘beige flags’ which have been defined as ‘a warning sign or concern that may not be as serious as a red flag but still warrants attention and consideration’ (stock image)
Cancer – Frequently using cheesy or cliché pick-up lines
According to the experts, while using the occasional playful or light-hearted pick-up line can be fun, relying too heavily on cheesy or cliché lines ‘may indicate a lack of originality or depth in the approach to dating’.
This, they say, can therefore be perceived as a ‘beige flag’.
‘Those born under the sign of the crab love traditional ways and sticking with the tried-and-tested.
‘They believe in true love and would like to make sure that you are attracted to them,’ say Charlotte and Inbaal.
Leo – Showing an obsession with social media or excessive selfies
An excessive focus on social media or constant posting of selfies may imply a need for validation or a preoccupation from others, therefore clearly holding Leo traits, according to the experts.
According to Charlotte and Inbaal: ‘Those born under the sign of the lion love to present a well-put-together image. They dress impeccably, and are well versed in manners. Leos take pride in looking good.’
Virgo – Having an extensive list of dating ‘deal-breakers’ or requirements
While having preferences and boundaries is healthy, an extensive and rigid list of deal-breakers or requirements might indicate an overly selective or inflexible mindset, reducing your chances of finding someone, and can also be viewed as judgemental to some.
Charlotte and Inbaal say: ‘Those born under the sign of the virgin like things to be just as they like them. They are very particular and feel comfortable within their own boundaries. They learn from personal experience.’
Libra – Being overly focused on appearance or constantly checking themselves in mirrors or reflective surfaces
Libra’s born under the sign of the Scales are gorgeous and they know it. But they are never sure if they could perhaps look nicer, so they check.
‘A little glance in the mirror here, a quick selfie to be on the safe side. However, excessive preoccupation with physical appearance or self-image can be a turn off for some, as this may indicate insecurities or a shallow focus on their superficial qualities,’ according to the experts.
Scorpio – Being overly enthusiastic about future plans too early in the relationship
While excitement about the future can be positive, excessive enthusiasm or premature planning might indicate a tendency to rush into things or an unrealistic view of the relationship’s progression.
The experts say: ‘And intensity is everything for those born under the sign of the scorpion. They want you to know they are serious, and they try to think big. They do not want to miss the opportunity to sweep you off your feet.’
Sagittarius – Frequently cancelling or rescheduling plans at the last minute
While occasional changes in plans can be understandable, frequent last-minute cancellations or rescheduling might indicate a lack of respect for your time or a general flakiness.
‘But they just cannot help it! Those born under the sign of the archer are absent-minded and they bite off more than they can chew.
‘They may head to a different party after your date, or arrive from lunch, and they struggle to fit all their socialising into their day,’ Charlotte and Inbaal note.

Cancer – Frequently using cheesy or cliché pick-up lines
Leo – Showing an obsession with social media or excessive selfies
Virgo – Having an extensive list of dating ‘deal-breakers’ or requirements
Libra – Being overly focused on appearance or constantly checking themselves in mirrors or reflective surfaces
Scorpio – Being overly enthusiastic about future plans too early in the relationship

Capricorn – Displaying a tendency to name-drop or brag about connections or accomplishments
Aquarius – Overindulging in self-deprecating humour
Pisces – Always talking about their exes, even in passing
Aries – Being excessively competitive during casual activities or games
Taurus – Demonstrating an obsession with their pet or hobby
Gemini – Constantly checking their phone during a date
Capricorn – Displaying a tendency to name-drop or brag about connections and accomplishments
Constantly name-dropping or boasting about connections and accomplishments can be indicative of an inflated ego or a need for validation.
According to the experts, Capricorns, the sign of the sea-goat, are very driven and motivated.
They add: ‘They find it easy to navigate the business world, but the dating world is not their natural arena.’
Aquarius – Overindulging in self-deprecating humour
Those born under the sign of the water-bearer are loyal and funny, and certainly quirky.
They love to make you laugh, and will often do it at their own expense.
‘This can be seen as a ‘beige flag’ as some self-deprecating humour can be endearing, overindulgence in it may hint at deeper insecurities or a negative self-image,’ say Charlotte and Inbaal.
Pisces – Always talking about their exes, even in passing
Those born under the sign of the fish are so romantic, they probably already dated everyone.
And they stay friends with their ex-lovers, which means those exes become part of your life, too.
However, constantly bringing up past relationships, especially early on, can suggest unresolved emotional attachments or a lack of readiness to move forward.
According to the experts: ‘It may be worth discussing boundaries and ensuring that the focus is on building a new connection rather than dwelling on the past.’
Aries – Being excessively competitive during casual activities or games
A healthy dose of competition can be enjoyable, but excessive competitiveness may lead to tension or an imbalance in the relationship dynamics.
Aries people enjoy a bit of hearty competition, according to the experts.
They add that Aries people ‘love the exhilaration and they love to win, a clear match to this beige flag’.
Friends may find it charming, but others can see it for how unusual it is.
Taurus – Demonstrating an obsession with their pet or hobby
Those born under the sign of the bull love their own peace and their own space.
While having a passion or strong connection to a pet or hobby is not necessarily negative, an excessive view on this might indicate difficulties in finding a balance between personal interests and the relationship.
‘Taurus people find it challenging to open up to a partner and would therefore hide behind a pet or a hobby,’ Charlotte and Inbaal say.
Gemini – Constantly checking their phone during a date
Those born under the sign of the twins are always on their way to a party and have a social life to rival anybody’s.
They need a multitude of people around them, not just one.
‘This behaviour can indicate a lack of presence or interest in the current moment.
‘It may suggest that they are easily distracted or not fully engaged in the date, which can be an indication of a “beige flag”,’ the experts believe.
