SKIRTS ARE BACK
I’ve never really got skirts. What’s the point of them? I either want the power and masculinity of trousers, whether tailored or denim — or I want the elegance, formality and simplicity of a dress.
Skirts, of which I own precisely one, make me feel like I’m back at school. So my heart sank a little when I saw the bejewelled minis at Moschino. I heaved a heavy sigh at the diamond-encrusted midis at Dolce & Gabanna, and Gucci’s black pencil left me a curious mixture of bored and anxious.
SLINKY SATIN
The skirt is clearly back — and back with a vengeance. But how to get on board? The answer, for me, is in the current mania for all things 1990s (which shows no signs of waning) — and the bias-cut, satin slip skirt.
Remember Gwyneth Paltrow in 1998, starring as Estella in an updated Great Expectations? She was at the height of her powers, wearing that jaw-droppingly insouciant green Donna Karan slip skirt and barely buttoned blouse. That was the hook for me.

CRAM IN COLOUR
Luckily, thanks to the 1990s revival, there are plenty of satin slips to choose from on the High Street. Suddenly, all the advantages of a skirt seem obvious. Whatever goes with your dull old jeans will work just as well with this skirt — and you’ll look a damn sight more stylish.
It’s an easy way to breathe new life into a tired wardrobe, especially when you go for something colourful and eye-catching, like Boden’s hot pink design (below). Or take notes from Proenza Schouler and go for a brilliant blue — Hush has an affordable option for £59.
