Woman blasted for wearing an 'inappropriate' outfit to a wedding

Business exec, 29, blasted for wearing an ‘inappropriate’ outfit to a summer wedding – sparking heated debate over formal fashion

  • Olivia Burrows Sutherland donned a Zimmerman skirt with a bandeau bra top
  • Many said the top ‘shouldn’t be worn to a wedding’

A young businesswoman has been criticised for wearing an outfit to a wedding deemed to be ‘inappropriate’.

Olivia Burrows Sutherland, from Melbourne, sought advice from her 73,000 TikTok followers and asked which outfit she should wear hours before the event over the weekend.

The 29-year-old bought a $525 rust-coloured skirt from Zimmermann last minute and wasn’t sure which top to pair it with – a black, thin-strapped crop top or a beige bandeau bra top.

She opted for the latter as it was a 37-degree day. But in the comments of the video posted, many shared what they truly thought and believed the top ‘shouldn’t be worn to a wedding’.

Olivia, who’s the co-founder of MyGlow2 and is known for sharing fashion videos on social media, received some backlash as many said the top looked ‘basic’ compared to the dress and is ‘too close to white’.

She had the option to buy the matching cropped bodice top from Zimmerman – which costs $475 – but she thought it would be ‘too much’ for a wedding guest to wear.

Her final two outfit options were also last minute as one outfit she purchased didn’t arrive on time and another had long sleeves, which she wasn’t keen to wear on such a hot day.

‘I didn’t expect the outfit to be so controversial, but I do know when it comes to weddings and wedding guest attire, everyone has an opinion,’ Olivia told news.com.au.

‘I understand that this is not a traditional wedding guest look, however, fashion has evolved, and two-piece sets have become popular options for guests to wear to events.’

The video has since been viewed more than 220,000 times and attracted hundreds of comments.

‘Skirt is gorgeous, don’t think the tops appropriate for a wedding sorry!’ one person wrote in the comments.

Another agreed and said: ‘I wouldn’t wear that top to a wedding.’

A third said: ‘Skirt is stunning. Tops no. They were disappointing.’

Another encouraged Olivia to wear the matching top with the skirt.

‘I feel like it’s a bit basic, you should really wear the matching top – I’m sure it would look amazing and still fitting for the wedding,’ the woman wrote.

Despite the backlash, others said Olivia looked ‘amazing’.

‘The beige is absolutely fine, it’s simple and looks lovely! I think it’s completely appropriate for a wedding!’ one said.

‘So many negative comments my goodness! The beige looks amazing with it, wear whatever you’re comfortable in,’ another said.

‘The skirt has so much presence and I think the tops are suitable. Either colour works well with the accessories,’ another added.
