A woman has sparked a fierce online debate after revealing that her brother-in-law named his new dog after her, with some saying it’s flattering and others telling her to cut him out of her life.
The anonymous poster took to the British parenting forum Mumsnet to share her story and ask for other people’s thoughts.
She revealed that she’s always had a jokey relationship with her husband’s brother, and they used to ‘take the mick’ out of each other.
However, things have gone a step too far after he named the new family dog after her, and she feels ‘seriously embarrassed and hurt’ and is afraid of people mocking her over it.
Some commenters insisted she was being too sensitive and urged her to move on, but others agreed it was offensive and said they wouldn’t speak to him anymore.

The anonymous UK-based poster took to Mumsnet to share her woes, revealing that her brother-in-law named his dog after her, and her partner thought she was being over sensitive by being upset about it
Explaining the situation, she wrote: ‘My other half’s brother and I get on but more recently not the case.
We used to argue over anything and everything and take the mick, but this was often restricted to when it was only our family [and] their family is there, ie my other half and children, and the same for him.
‘Brother-in-law retired early at 50 about a year ago and his son and his wife that live in the same house decided to get a dog. This was about a month ago. They’ve named the dog the same name as mine and I found it very insulting.
‘My other half said they have always loved my name and this is why they have done it.
‘When we met last week at a wedding I said to them they could have picked another name out of the millions, they just smiled and said it was a lovely name.
‘They all had smirks on their faces. My children laughed initially, but they get it and told me to ignore it.
‘My other half is saying I’ve always been too “sensitive” and a “hypocrite”. For example, I often take the p*** out of the brother-in-law and his wife, but as I said only when the two families are alone
‘I’m seriously embarrassed, hurt and fear others finding out about this and mocking me. Am I being unreasonable?’
A number of respondents felt that it isn’t that big a deal, and that the poster shouldn’t show that they are annoyed by it
Some said it is not a big deal, and the poster shouldn’t waste time worrying about it.
One wrote: ‘They gave the dog your name. So what? You don’t own it and there’s not a thing you can do about it so just let it go.’
Another added: ‘I don’t get why it’s a big deal.
‘People don’t name their dogs with names they hate, it’s names they like and dogs are very much (in most cases) loved and part of the family.
‘I’ve never understood why people get so upset about it.’
And a third wrote: ‘It sounds like you are very easy to wind up and they find it funny that everything sets you off.
‘It also sounds like you are a bit paranoid, how do you think they are training their yappy dog to bark at you? By showing it your photo? I would just rise above it, if they don’t see you getting yourself worked up they won’t do it but while you keep providing them with a reaction they will keep finding it fun to poke at you.’
For some, the thought of having a much-loved companion animal named after them was very flattering
Others felt it was actually a compliment, and didn’t see why anyone would be offended.
One wrote: ‘Take it as a compliment. The joke is on them because the dog is s loved member of the household.’
Another agreed, writing: ‘Am I the only one who would be flattered?’
And a third added: ‘Why would you feel insulted?’
Meanwhile others felt that the brother-in-law has behaved appallingly, and that the poster would be within her rights to cut him out of her life
However others were outraged on the poster’s behalf, and agreed that the situation was insulting.
One suggested she cut the family members out of her life, writing: ‘Id suggest you go NC [non contact] with them.’
Another said: ‘YANBU, they sound like utter c**** smirking about it.
‘Don’t invite them round again and don’t go to theirs again.’
And a third was in firm agreement, adding: ‘Sounds like a good excuse to swerve spending time with them.
‘Whenever your OH wants to visit, say, “No, you take the kids. I wouldn’t want to confuse the dog” and have a nice, peaceful time by yourself at home.’
