Darcy’s video received so much attention that a doctor even commented on it.
Dr. Joseph Salhab, or the @Stomachdoc on TikTok, duetted Darcy’s video and shared an explanation as to why the technique helps.
The gastroenterologist, who boasts more than 1.2 million followers, said: ‘So there is some truth that sniffing a lemon when you’re feeling sick to your stomach can help relieve nausea and vomiting.’
However, he noted that it didn’t have to be a lemon, adding what helps is the act of deep breathing and inhaling a scent.
‘Whenever you deep breathe or inhale an aroma, signals get sent to your brain and this may trigger a relaxation or a soothing effect on the stomach.
‘This can also evoke pleasant feelings, which can distract from your feeling of nauseous or abdominal pain,’ he explained.

Dr. Joseph noted that inhaling a scent can even help to calm down anxiety.
‘So, the way to do this is to breathe in slowly through your nose and then hold your breath for about three seconds and then slowly breathe out of your mouth.
‘You can do this several times until your nausea subsides,’ he added.
At the end of the clip, he noted that this is the perfect trick when you don’t have any medications around.
