Woman shares ‘genius’ hack for getting rid of gnats using garlic butter: ‘It works every time’
- Unwanted fruit flies invade homes in the masses
- But now a home owner has shared simple way to get rid of the bugs for good
A woman has been praised for revealing a simple but clever way to get rid of fruit flies without using any chemical sprays.
The tiny annoying insects are usually attracted to sweet scents – such as fruit kept on the kitchen bench – and can invade homes in masses.
But to kill the flies the woman said all you need to do is leave a small cup of garlic butter on the counter.
Three snaps taken over five minutes show the bugs being lured and trapped in the sticky paste which was then thrown out.

Over just five minutes dozens of fruit flies became stuck in the yellow garlic paste that was then thrown out
‘Just a heads up for anyone that are dealing with pesky gnats or fruit flies,’ the woman wrote.
‘Open up a cup of garlic butter and they go straight to it. This picture is after about five minutes of opening it.
‘It’s gross but it’s better than having them fly around everywhere.’
The photos show more and more bugs slowly being attracted to the garlic butter cup only to get stuck then die.
‘Nice! Maybe my fruit flies will go to that,’ one person commented, while another added: ‘Good idea!’
A third tagged a friend and said: ‘I need this for my room!’
One woman who tried the hack confirmed it works every time.
’10/10 recommend the garlic butter dip hack for gnats!! I’ve tried everything and this has been the most effective!’ she wrote.
Previously other frustrated home owners also swear by a DIY tactic to remove fruit flies from their home once and for all.
Previously a group of Australian mothers shared a DIY trick for getting rid of the pesky fruit flies for good – and you only need two ingredients – apple vinegar and liquid detergent
One woman said this (pictured) was her fourth glass after the rain sparked an ‘infestation’ of fruit flies
‘For those suffering from fruit flies, gnats or whatever these feral pains are… apple cider vinegar and dishwashing liquid – this is what it caught in 30 minutes,’ one mother said, alongside a picture of the dead fruit flies.
One woman said she used the same trick, and she was able to get rid of an ‘influx of fruit flies’ amid Queensland humidity.
‘I put some small dishes around the house with apple cider vinegar and a dash of dishwashing liquid and have caught so many. Highly recommend,’ she said.
Another woman said she was pleasantly surprised the trick worked after the ingredients attracted more than 100 fruit flits.
One woman said: ‘I swear by this too. It’s amazing.’
