‘All that for a fancy fridge and a box room!’ Worst House on the Street viewers slam ‘deluded’ woman who went £33,000 over budget and spent £73,000 renovating her terrace house – but experts say she’ll make a profit
- Viewers of the Channel 4 property show were shocked at the buyer’s spend
- Sana, from Bristol, had a budget of £30,000 with a ‘contingency’ £10,000
- Despite setting aside plenty of cash, Sana ‘blew the budget out of the ocean’
Viewers of Worst House on the Street on Channel 4 were left in shock after a first-time buyer went over-budget by £33k while doing up her house.
Sana, from the Bristolian suburb of Kingswood, bought her three-bedroom house, described as a ‘fixer-upper’, for £280,000.
At the beginning of the episode Sana explained her budget for doing up her home was £30,000, with an extra £10,000 for emergencies.
But after admitting she had spent significantly more by the end of the project, gobsmacked viewers took to Twitter to express their shock.
As she showed presenters Scarlette and Stuart around the dilapidated house, which was lacking in power sockets and had rotting wood around the window frames, she admitted she had a big project on her hands.
The corporate lawyer, who was living in the box room at her parents’ house while she waited for her house to be completed, told the property experts she’d had some ‘nasty surprises’ since buying the house.
‘We’ve realised the roof needs doing,’ she said. ‘There’s a lot of damp behind the wallpaper.’
However after a long few months and a lot of money, Sana transformed the crumbling house into a sleek, open plan haven with a monochrome kitchen and a bright study for her to work from home.

Sana’s bathroom has been transformed with a new suite and a chic tiled feature wall which cost £85
Sana had the entire house re-plastered and decorated in a monochrome theme – apart from the study which took on a bright orange, yellow and pink theme

The space, which was decorated according to the monochrome theme, was kitted out with top appliances
When Scarlette and Stuart returned to the house after renovations had been completed, they were shocked by Sana’s incredible progress – although Stuart pointed out the driveway at the front of the house had not been renovated.
However when they sat down with the homeowner in the new kitchen/diner area and asked her how much she had spent on the renovation, Sana said: ‘I almost don’t want to tell you.’
She then explained she had ‘blown the budget out of the ocean’ and had gone £33k over budget, spending a total of £73,000 on the house.
Sana said: ‘A lot of that went into the fact that we had to sack cheaper trades and get in higher quality trades who were charging a lot more.
‘But by that point I was just fed up. I wanted the good finish.’
As Sana chatted to Stuart and Scarlette, she revealed she had spent a whopping £73,000 on the renovation which was over budget by £33,000
Viewers took to Twitter to express their shock at how much Sana had spent on doing up her house as she went more than £30k over budget
While viewers were impressed at Sana’s work they expressed their shock at the amount of money she had spent on the house.
Taking to Twitter they aired their views about the amount of money she had spent and criticised her decision.
One person said: ‘Could you imagine someone on Homes Under the Hammer spending £73k doing a house up?’
Another complained: ‘Omg. So her budget was £30k. £40k MAX. And she ended up spending £73k!! And she still didn’t get around to doing the driveway?!’
One Twitter user mocked Sana’s choices and said she had spent the money on ‘a fancy fridge and a pattern on the box room wall’.
Despite some people expressing shock about the amount Sana had spent, some people explained that it was not that unusual to spent tens of thousands of pounds on doing up a house.
One person said: ‘Renovations are mega expensive now & materials and labour is ridiculous.’
However, some people still thought Sana had not spent her money well, criticising her decision to spend £17,000 on fixing up the kitchen alone.
Despite criticism it seems Sana will have the last laugh after Scarlette and Stuart told her the property had been valued at £377,000 after it was renovated.
After spending a total of £353,000 on buying and doing up the house, she will still make a profit of £24,000.
