Arsenal equal stunning record by winning eight out of nine top-flight games - but history suggests it's a BAD omen

ARSENAL fans are in dreamland after Sunday's thrilling victory over Liverpool.

The Gunners have now won eight out of nine Premier League games – but recent history suggests their start of season form is actually a BAD omen.

It's just the fourth time in Arsenal history that at least eight out of their nine opening top-flight games have ended with a win.

The Gunners achieved the feat under Arsene Wenger in the 2004-05 and 2007-08 seasons.

But they failed to go on to win the Prem on BOTH occasions.

The Gunners did win Division One in 1947-48 after making the same strong start – although that can hardly be considered recent history.

So if the last 20 years are anything to go by the stunning start could ultimately result in a doomed season.

Wenger and Co ended up finishing second to Chelsea by 12 points in 2004-05, the season after the Invincibles campaign.

They won eight out of their opening nine league games, drawing the other, until defeat to Manchester United in their tenth match of the Prem season.

That was the result that ended the incredible 49 game unbeaten run in the league.

And just three years later another fast start came to nothing.

In 2007-08 Wenger guided the Gunners to eight wins from nine, with one draw, until consecutive draws with Liverpool and United halted their progress.

The Gunners could only manage to finish third by the end of the campaign, four points behind champions United, and two behind second-place Chelsea.

But with winnable Prem games against Leeds, Southampton and Nottingham Forest next up, there is the sense that this could well be Arsenal's year.

Especially after Sunday's superb 3-2 win over the Reds.
