Maddison’s creativity and Premier League experience could prove to be useful for Tottenham today. He certainly seems like the type of player to relish the responsibility he will be given at his new club.

Like Tottenham, Brentford also have some issues in attack with Ivan Toney unavailable. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa will be looking to make a major impact today.

New Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario will be eager to give a positive first impression and keep a clean sheet on his debut.

Following Kane’s departure there will inevitably be much focus on Richarlison today. He only scored one league goal last season but he has managed as many as 13 for Everton in previous years.

Collins starts for Brentford, while Mark Flekken makes his debut in goal.

Son captains Tottenham after taking over the armband, while Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario all make their debuts. Another new signing, Manor Solomon, is on the bench.

Tottenham have made some significant signings this summer, most notably bringing in James Maddison from Leicester. Maddison, who has already been appointed as vice-captain, is set to make his competitive debut for Tottenham today.

As far as Brentford are concerned, Nathan Collins, Kevin Schade and Mark Flekken are amongst the players to have arrived at the club this summer as Thomas Frank’s side look to build upon last season’s ninth placed finish.

This is a significant day for Tottenham. Not only is it their first game since the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, but new manager Ange Postecoglou also takes charge of his first competitive fixture since being appointed by the club. It will be intriguing to see how he fares in the Premier League and how he deals with the loss of a player who has been so impressive for Tottenham for so many years.
