British men’s 4x100m relay team secure bronze medal at World Championships as they put Tokyo Olympics controversy behind them after CJ Ujah’s failed drugs test saw them stripped of silver

The British men’s 4x100metres team put the heartbreak and controversy of the Tokyo Olympics behind them to claim bronze at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The quartet of Jona Efoloko, Zharnel Hughes, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Reece Prescod clocked 37.83sec to finish behind winners Canada and second-placed USA.

Mitchell-Blake and Hughes had been part of the team that were stripped of silver in Tokyo last year following CJ Ujah’s positive drugs test for two banned substances.

‘What happened in the past is in the past,’ said Hughes. ‘This is a new history. We can’t control the past, we can only control the present, and ultimately that dictates the future. I feel like we get a medal every year now and it’s becoming normalised.’

With Richard Kilty injured and Adam Gemili subbed out ahead of the final, it was an inexperienced quartet, with anchor runner Prescod running a first relay since his sports days at school and Efoloko making his major championships debut.

‘I was very nervous but Nethaneel told us that pressure is a privilege,’ said Efoloko. ‘I just kept that in the back of my head.’
