Darts star conceded game while drawing as opponents hygiene was disgusting

A darts player conceded his match because he couldn't put up with the bad hygiene habits of his opponent – that's according to Keith Deller anyway.

The 63-year-old split opinion last week at the World Seniors Darts Championship at Circus Tavern, as some fans believe he used excessive chalk on his hands in his first round win over Mike Huntley. The chalk, which he kept in his top pocket, even got on his nose at one point.

It didn't help him at the next stage though, hammered 3-0 by Neil Duff. And afterwards, the 1983 world champion took to Twitter to take aim at his critics: " Disappointing today but well done to Neil Duff and good luck to rest of the tournament, anybody moaning about the chalk, the two biggest names of all time, Eric Bristow and Phil Taylor never moaned about it."

Former professional player James Hubbard then weighed in, telling Deller "pundits are paid to have an opinion." He added: "They’ve just been honest about form in their predictions, no jealousy or disrespect" – a response to Deller also suggesting he was the victim of jealousy from analysts.

"Your opinion James," Deller wrote back. "To say ban chalk. What about player putting on stuff that stinks and is very off putting? Also a player you know on the pro tour conceded the game at 4-4 because the persons hygiene was disgusting, where does it end?"

'The Fella' didn't attach any names to his claims, at which point Hubbard opted out of the debate: "Well I don’t know anything about all that mate, so not gonna get involved with it," he wrote.

Behaviour at the oche has frequently been in the spotlight in the sport, as has the issue of aroma. Back in 2018, Gary Anderson had to publicly defend himself after being accused of farting on stage by Dutchman Wesley Harms at the Grand Slam of Darts.

"If the boy thinks I've farted he's 1010% wrong. I swear on my children's lives that it was not my fault," the two time world champion protested afterwards. "I had a bad stomach once on stage before and admitted it. So I'm not going to lie about farting on stage."

At the 2022/23 World Championships at the Ally Pally, then world No 1 Gerywn Price came under fire, although it was nothing to do with hygiene. The abrasive Welshman emerged midway through his match with Gabriel Clemens wearing ear protectors, in a bid to drown out the booing of the crowd.
