Darts youngster Owen Bates is one of the most talked about players in the world right now as he prepares to compete in his first World Darts Championship.
The 20-year-old has caused a stir in the Players Championship and on the PDC Challenge Tour in 2023, but his rude nickname is one of the most spoken about things leading up to Ally Pally.
Bates booked his spot at Ally Pally in October before questions began to be asked whether his nickname ‘The Master’ would be allowed on the biggest stage of darts.

Speaking to Modus Super Series, Bates was asked about his nickname which has caused huge attention, regarding whether or not he will be known as ‘The Master’ at Ally Pally or if he’s got a new name lined up, he replied: “So, no, I won’t have a new nickname for the World Championships, that’s for sure.”
His recent interview comes after his fans were left guessing whether ‘The Master’ Bates would have a new moniker for the tournament after he previously went silent on his nickname before fellow darts player Matthew Edgar reported Bates’ reply.
What do you think Owen Bates’ new nickname should be? Let us know in the comments section.
He said: "I was advised by the PDC to change my nickname and I fully respect their decision and completely understand why they've made the decision they have." Bates said he was in no rush to find a new nickname, wanting some ‘organic’, which might mean he enters the Worlds without a nickname at all.
Bates previously confirmed that he would be dropping his rude nickname on Twitter, saying: “Any suggestions on a new nickname?! Also, get my darts before it’s too late, these will be the last ever ‘The Master’ darts made!"
The Ally Pally debutant kicks off his campaign against Steve Lennon on Wednesday, December 20, in round one. The winner of that tie will play former Premier League champ Jonny Clayton on Saturday, December 23.
