Elliot Thompson is crowned UK decathlon champion in Manchester

Elliot Thompson – son of British athletics legend and Olympic gold medallist Daley – follows in his father’s footsteps to be crowned the new decathlon champion at UK Championships, 46 years after his famous dad first won it!

Elliot Thompson has become the new men’s UK decathlon champion after winning the 1500m in Manchester.

Thompson finished ahead of Caius Joseph and Jack Turner at the UK Athletics Championships to take gold and claim his new title. 

He follows in his famous father’s footsteps 46 years after dad Daley Thompson became UK decathlon champion.

He replicates the success of his dad Daley Thompson 46 years after the Olympic gold medalist became decathlon champion

The 29-year-old started poorly in the men’s decathlon with a 6th placed finish in the 100m sprint on Friday.

Thompson recovered as he finished 2nd in the long jump and followed up by winning the men’s shot put event.

Success then followed in the high jump as he narrowly missed out on victory in the event to Charlie Roe.

Thompson won two events in the first day of the decathlon on his way to taking the title

Thompson continued to gain momentum in the decathlon event by winning the men’s 400m race on Friday with a time of 49.98.

The son of Olympic gold medalist Daley Thompson struggled for form on Saturday as he started the day by finishing 4th in decathlon’s 110m hurdle event.

A 5th placed finish in the discuss throw was followed up with Thompson ending the pole vault event in 4th.

Thompson’s first effort in the javelin throw was ruled out and his subsequent two throws failed to make a mark as he finished the event second bottom.

However, the talented athlete responded to take his first win of the day in the men’s 1500m and recording a personal best of 4.23.18 to win the event overall and become the new UK men’s decathlon champion.

The 29-year-old struggled on Saturday but rallied to take gold in the men’s 1500m event
