Frankie Dettori suffers Derby heartbreak on his final ride as Auguste Rodin storms to Epsom victory | The Sun

AIDAN O'BRIEN waved his magic wand at Epsom once more as Auguste Rodin bounced back to win the Derby under Ryan Moore.

Beaten out of sight in the 2,000 Guineas, Auguste Rodin repaid O'Brien's faith by running down outsider King Of Steel in the final furlong.

It wasn't to be for Frankie Dettori on his final ride in the Derby, as 4-1 favourite Arrest failed to fire and finished well beaten in tenth.

King Of Steel looked set to cause a 66-1 shock when he shot clear at the top of the hill on his first start of the year.

Moore, in classic fashion, didn't panic and slowly reeled in Kevin Stott, getting up in the dying strides at 9-2.

White Birch was last at the top of the hill and did extremely well to finish third for John Murphy and Colin Keane, who was having his first ride in the race.

Sprewell was looking to give Jessie Harrington a fairytale success in the race but after failing to handle Epsom, he could only finish fourth.

It was Moore's first Derby since Rule The World scored in 2013 and was his third in total.

For O'Brien, it was business as usual in Britain's biggest Classic, winning a record extending tenth Derby.

Remarkably, the master of Ballydoyle has won seven of the last 12 Derby's.

Back my 18-1 tip to bash the bookies on Epsom Derby day

The result was a relief for bookies, who were fearing a big-race Dettori double after his win on Soul Sister in Friday's Oaks.

Coral's David Steven's said: "As expected after his Group 1 double on Friday, Frankie Dettori's final Derby mount was sent off favourite.

"There was to be no fairytale ending on this occasion, and although Auguste Rodin was also towards the head of the betting, his victory was a much more welcome result for the layers than a win for Arrest would have been."
