England captain Harry Kane and former striker Gary Lineker were among the sportspeople leading the tributes to the Queen following her death at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace announced the news on Thursday evening.
Kane hailed the Queen as an ‘amazing inspiration.’
The Tottenham striker tweeted: ‘My thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time.
‘The Queen was an amazing inspiration and will be remembered for her incredible years of service to this country. Rest in peace, Your Majesty.’
Lineker tweeted: ‘Such a terribly sad day. Her Majesty The Queen has died.
‘A truly remarkable woman who served her country with dignity, loyalty and grace. A comforting ever present in the lives of most of us. Rest In Peace, Your Majesty.’

Chelsea and England forward Raheem Sterling offered his condolences to the Royal Family.
He said on Instagram: ‘My deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this incredibly sad time.’
Fellow England stars Jack Grealish and Mason Mount posted messages on social media.
Grealish tweeted: ‘RIP Your Majesty’, while Mount added ‘Thank you for your service. Rest in peace Your Majesty’.

Fellow ex-boxer Nicola Adams, who won two Olympic gold medals, received an MBE from the Queen.
She tweeted: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear that the Queen has passed away, I will never forget how happy I was receiving my MBE From her majesty the Queen after I won my gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.’
Anthony Joshua, who won Olympic gold alongside Adams in 2012, simply put ‘Rest in peace’, while heavyweight contender Derek Chisora added: ‘Our Queen. Thank you.’

Germany and Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan tweeted: ‘A sad day for the UK – May she rest in peace.’
Former England fast bowler Darren Gough thanked a ‘remarkable lady’.
The Yorkshireman added on Instagram: ‘Zero fuss & carried her duties on until the very end… Thank you, Your Majesty.’

Former England captain and current World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont tweeted: ‘World Rugby joins the people of the United Kingdom, The Commonwealth and all those around the globe in mourning the loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
‘Her Majesty The Queen will be remembered as a much-loved, visionary monarch, who cared deeply about all people under her reign, and was an avid supporter of sport and its power to unite communities.

There were also messages from a number of British sports governing bodies as The Premier League said it was ‘deeply saddened’ by The Queen’s death.

‘Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family and everyone around the world mourning the loss of Her Majesty,’ the league said.
The Rugby Football Union posted its own tribute which read: ‘On behalf of the rugby union community in England, all at the Rugby Football Union are very saddened to hear of the death of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and offer our condolences to the whole Royal Family at this time.’
The England and Wales Cricket Board also paid their respects, writing: ‘The England and Wales Cricket Board is deeply saddened at the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The thoughts of everyone involved in the game are with the whole Royal Family.’
