Gerwyn Price back in ear defenders to face Van Gerwen in lip-reading challenge

Gerwyn Price has appeared in ear defenders again as he took on Michael van Gerwen in a lip-reading challenge.

The former world number one shocked darts fans back at the PDC World Darts Championship by wearing the head gear during his quarter-final loss to Gabriel Clemens. He was back in them earlier this week as he faced Van Gerwen in the Moneybarn Whisper Challenge ahead of night five of the Premier League Darts in Exeter on Thursday.

A clip of the challenge shows the pair reading out words, phrases and song lyrics whilst their opponent has their ears covered by headphones.

Correctly guessing what the other player says earns a point but Price was left struggling until Van Gerwen started to read out a series of darts terms.

Meanwhile, Van Gerwen's first time guess of "didgeridoo" left Price questioning: "Has he got his earphones on!" That quip prompted an expletive-riddled response from Van Gerwen.

Footage of the challenge left darts fans in stitches on social media as one tweeted: "This is too funny." Another added: "This killed me man, the two GOATs."

Van Gerwen himself also reshared the post and wrote: "This was fun with @Gezzyprice." The duo are set to meet in the quarter-finals on night five of this season's Premier League at the Westpoint Arena in Exeter on Thursday.

Their meeting comes after Van Gerwen beat Price in last week's final in Dublin. That result means the Dutchman goes into Thursday night top of the standings, with Price two places behind him in third.

Price will be hoping that he does not need to bring out his ear defenders again after donning them in his 5-1 loss to Clemens in a bid to block out the noise of the rowdy Alexandra Palace crowd on New Year's Day.

He had emerged for the fifth set with the headphones on after falling 3-1 behind to his German opponent but was unable to turn the match around. Price even threatened he would not return to the event because of the crowd after the match.
