Harry Kane has said playing for Bayern Munich is ‘insane’ as he prepares for his home debut – as the German giants reveal how close they came to missing out on their star signing.
Kane is gearing up for today’s showdown with Bayern’s Bavarian rivals Augsburg at a rocking Allianz Arena a week after scoring on his league debut in a 4-0 win at Werder Bremen.
Kane-mania is already seeing record shirt sales of the England skipper’s replica jersey and he’s looking forward to repaying the fans who he insists create a better atmosphere than in the Premier League.
‘The atmosphere in Bremen was incredible, very different from England and the Premier League,’ said Kane, two weeks after his £85m switch from Tottenham. ‘It was a league game, but it felt like a big European night, like a Champions League game.
‘What was really impressive was the atmosphere. I have to adapt to it.’

Bayern had sold more than 13,000 Kane replica shirts within 24 hours of his arrival earlier this month, a record for any player.
And Kane is acutely aware that brings pressure ahead of his first league appearance at the Allianz Arena.
‘Mr Rummenigge [Karl-Heinz, former player and board member] explained to me how big the pressure is at Bayern: trophies are expected here – actually more than just one. We have to win. That’s the mentality here and this FC Bayern mentality will make me better as a player and help me progress.’
Kane left Spurs as the club’s record scorer but insisted, in a dig at Tottenham that competing in the Champions League was a huge draw.
‘I wanted this experience, to fight for titles, for the Champions League,’ he said. ‘Playing for a club as huge as Bayern is an insane challenge. I was thinking less about the league and more about FC Bayern: How can I get better? Bayern is the perfect club for me.’

Meanwhile, former club president Uli Hoeness has revealed how close the deal to sign Kane was hijacked by hard bargaining from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
‘At midnight we had a verbal agreement, but at 2:50am, the deal was called into question again,’ Hoeness said in an interview with Bild. ‘They asked again for a larger amount. Jan [Dreesen, Bayern’s chief executive] then said: “Not a penny more”.
‘It took six hours for [Daniel] Levy to accept that we were stubborn about it and for the plane that had been waiting for Harry at Stansted that morning to finally take off.’
According to Hoeness, Levy was forced into a corner by Kane apparently saying if a deal to join Bayern wasn’t done he would stay at Spurs and leave on a free next summer at the end of his contract.
