And they delighted in Beth Mead giving the hosts the lead after a nervy start against the Austrians.

Her delightful lobbed finish was the first goal of the tournament and perhaps the United players will be inspired given their own shortcomings last season.

Earlier, England captain Harry Kane had wished the women’s side well with a video message on social media.

‘Just want to send a message out to England women’s team, obviously they’re getting their Euros campaign started. I just want to wish them all the best,’ Kane said in a video posted on his Twitter page.

‘It’s a home tournament as well so it’s going to be an incredible atmosphere and I’m just urging all the fans to go out there and support them. Make them feel at home.

‘All the best from me and the team. We’ll be watching and cheering you guys on. Have an amazing time, and good luck!’

Perhaps watching the Women’s side will inspire Maguire and De Gea after United’s poor previous campaign.
