I won £7,000 in bets while I was in intensive care – now my own horse is racing at Cheltenham | The Sun

A FORMER brickie won a £7,000 bet while recovering from a coma in intensive care.

Trevor Jacobs, 68, scooped a £7k jackpot from his hospital bed
after his son Ryan put a bet on for him.

Doctors on the ward started asking Trevor for tips after he won£7,000 on a trixie bet, which is four bets on three horses.

Speaking to The Telegraph the Portsmouth man said: "The consultant came in and said, ‘I can’t believe what I’m seeing. You can’t move and you can’t breathe or talk and you’ve just won £7,000.'

“Now they all want to know what the tips are. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen every Saturday.”

The bricklayer turned businessman had come back from a golfing holiday in Bruges when his leg went weak during the early hours of the morning.

He managed to crawl down the stairs and then phone his son Ryan.

Medical tests were inconclusive but he was placed into a coma when the condition spread to hislungs. His heart stopped twice but doctors were able to keep Trevor alive.

He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome ( GBS.) The auto-immune disease shuts down bodily functions such as the ability to walk and even breathe.

His son Ryan, 25, told The Sun of how he raced around to his dad's after Trevor became unwell last July.

Agonising moment Mahler Mission's owners see him fall on verge of Cheltenham win

He said: "His legs had gone so I sat with him and waited for the ambulance. At first the tests suggested he was fine."

Ryan said that his dad's lung function suddenly deteriorated and he was placed in an induced coma.

Ryan said his dad came out of the coma in August and has been recovering in intensive care since.

The Man United fan said: "They are trying to reduce his reliance on the ventilator.

"Once he can breath for 24 hours without assistance he can move into a rehabilitation centre."

Trevor compared his ordeal to a "hand grenade being thrown into his body." He was unable to walk or talk for several months.

He said he was now being weaned off the ventilator but would probably be in hospital for a few more months.

Trevor, a serial race horse owner, bought a share in French horse Editeur Du Gite in November 2019.

Editeur Du Gite, trained by Gary Moore, won the the Desert Orchid at Kempton the Grade One Clarence House Chase in January.

The nine-year-old is set to run today at Cheltenham and will be roared on by the Jacobs family. Meanwhile Trevor will be watching with interest from his hospital bed.
