Inter Miami has terminated goalkeeper Nick Marsman’s contract just weeks after he suggested the club was not prepared to sign Lionel Messi.

Messi’s arrival in South Florida was greeted with great fanfare after his shock move to MLS was sealed with an unveiling at DRV PNK Stadium.

While the World Cup winner has already proved the celebration was worth it with seven goals in four games, Marsman initially wasn’t convinced Miami’s signing of the Argentine was justified.

Back in June, the shotstopper suggested that David Beckham’s club wasn’t equipped to acquire a player of Messi’s quality.

‘I personally think that this club is not ready for Messi’s arrival,’ Marsman told ESPN. ‘We have a temporary stadium, people can just walk on the pitch, there are no gates.

But Marsman previously questioned whether David Beckham’s club was equipped for Messi

‘We also leave for the stadium without security. I think they aren’t ready. But I hope he comes.’

Just weeks after his comments, Inter Miami has ripped up the 32-year-old’s contract and bought him out of his deal.

In MLS, clubs are only allowed to terminate a player’s contract once during a season.

The Dutchman joined Miami partway through the 2021 season after two years with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.

He made 29 appearances for the club but failed to make it into the starting XI, playing backup to Drake Callender since he stepped up from Inter Miami II in November 2021.

The termination of his deal wraps up a rough few weeks for Marsman after he was hospitalized in June.

He was hospitalized for three days by a spider bite he got from a family trip to the zoo, his supermodel wife revealed on Instagram.

Nathalie den Dekker shared a picture of the Dutchman on his hospital bed and explained: ‘The downside of living in a tropical climate is if you go to the zoo and get bitten by a poisonous spider… end up being hospitalized for three days.’

Den Dekker, a former Miss Netherlands, also shared a picture of their daughter hugging Marsman in hospital and wrote: ‘Happy to have you back home, now get well soon.’

Inter Miami was only founded in 2018 ahead of joining MLS in 2020 and is currently enjoying just its fourth season of professional soccer.

Messi mania has already swept the city and the United States with his former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also attracting limelight to the club.

Ticket prices for MLS games across the United States skyrocketed immediately after Messi confirmed his move to Inter Miami with games selling out.

While the trio is yet to make its MLS debut, Messi has already been taking American soccer by storm in the Leagues Cup.

Inter Miami has advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament after staging an amazing comeback in Sunday’s match against FC Dallas, that it won 5-3 on penalties.

Messi and co. will now face Charlotte FC on Friday, August 11 at Miami’s home field DRV PNK Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
