Kalvin Phillips next club odds: Man City odds-on favourite for England midfielder as they step up pursuit for Leeds star | The Sun

MANCHESTER CITY are the odds-on favourites in the race to sign England midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds this summer.

Sky Bet have placed Pep Guardiola's side at 1/2 to secure the signing of Phillips, amid reports of City stepping up their pursuit for the 26-year-old this summer.

Phillips made 23 appearances this season in what was a campaign plagued by a hamstring injury that ruled him out for four months between December and April.

The 26-year-old was one of the standout players in Leeds' first season back in the Premier League in 2020-21, securing a 10th place finish and breaking in to Gareth Southgate's England side ahead of the Euros.

The defensive midfielder started every game in England's run to the final and played every minute, aside from being whisked off with 25 minutes to go in the quarter-final against Ukraine with England already 4-0 up.

Phillips, born in Leeds, has made over 230 appearances for his hometown club, having joined the academy as a 14-year-old, and was instrumental in their title-winning Championship side under Marcelo Bielsa in 2019-20.

Leeds secured survival on the final day of the season on Sunday as they overtook Burnley with a 2-1 win at Brentford.

Manchester City are likely to be on the hunt for a new defensive midfield option, after Fernandinho played his last game for the club in last month's title-winning win over Aston Villa.

City have been linked with the likes of Declan Rice, Frenkie de Jong, Jude Bellingham and Ruben Neves, but Sky Bet appear to think Phillips is the most likely option.

It has also been rumoured that Ilkay Gundogan could be on his way out of the door at the Etihad Stadium, furthering the need for bolstering the central midfield department.

Sky Bet are also offering 2/1 for Phillips to stay at Leeds for at least another season.

The midfielder's current contract runs until 2024 so the Yorkshire club are not in a position where they need to be selling.

After new manager Jesse Marsch secured Premier League survival on the final day of the season, so it's possible Phillips may want to continue with the club he has supported since his childhood.

The likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are also in the running for the 2020-21 England Men's Player of the Year along with a range of other Premier League clubs.

However it looks likely that Manchester City will be the side to secure his signature this summer.
