Salford were tipped to rise through the ranks with the backing of the former Manchester United clan after the sale went through in 2014.
They won promotion into the Football League after the 2018/19 season and have struggled in their promotion attempts since.
Last season they finished seven points adrift from a play-off spot by winning just one of their final five games.
Neil Wood takes over the reins this season from Gary Bowyer and the former Man Utd coach has made his first signing in Callum Hendry from Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.
They are 13/2 with Betfair to win the title this coming season.

While the 6/4 is a short price for promotion, there are several sides at relatively short prices in what is shaping up to be a competitive year.
Stockport County won the National League title last year and are tipped for back-to-back promotions. The are just 7/4 with Betfair to make the jump to League One.
County finished six points clear at the summit last year and are set for a strong season in the fourth tier.
Bradford are hot on the heels of the two leaders and they too have a short price for promotion, sitting currently at 2/1 with Betfair.
The Bantams finished in the bottom half last season and a full 19 points outside the play-off picture.
They will be lead by Mark Hughes, who took over in February and his wealth of experience is expected to take them on this campaign with a full pre-season at the club.
Mansfield suffered play-off final heartbreak last season when thumped 3-0 by Port Vale at Wembley.
They are 3/1 to make amends this year and make it to the third division of English football.
Leyton Orient and Swindon Town are 10/3 while Northampton, Gillingham, Tranmere and Doncaster are the host of clubs at 7/2 with Betfair.
