- Leeds United were relegated following a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday
- Home fans at Elland Road were visibly devastated – and some were left angry
- The club finished in 19th place following wins by Leicester City and Everton
Leeds United fans were left devastated as their time in the Premier League came to an end on Sunday.
The club’s fate was sealed with a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road – although wins for Leicester City and Everton would have condemned Leeds to the second tier regardless of their own result.
The Yorkshire side were promoted back into the big time in 2020, and had retained their Premier League status for three years, ultimately finishing 19th in this season’s Premier League campaign.
Sam Allardyce was thrown into the managerial hotseat as a late gamble to try and keep Leeds safe – but ultimately, it failed to materialise.
BT Sport’s coverage at the final whistle focused on fans at Elland Road who were noticeably in tears at the outcome of their season, as the final hopes of safety were extinguished by Spurs, with Harry Kane scoring twice on what might be his final outing in a Tottenham shirt.

Stewards were required to restrain fans who were trying to get onto the Elland Road pitch
Some were also visibly and vocally angry at the club’s failure, with stewards required to restrain some fans, while others heckled ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ in the direction of the Leeds players.
In the aftermath of the confirmation, Gary McAllister told BT Sport: ‘It’s a sad day. I believe it’s a Premier League club, but they now find themselves in the Championship.
‘We talk about levels and I thought the levels were extreme today, Spurs were excellent, a different level and I thought they won at a canter.
‘Leeds conceded early and then again in second half and then just after they scored to get back into the game. It’s a bad day for Leeds United, but Spurs were excellent.
‘They were really impressive and Harry Kane was sheer class.’

On the issue of relegation, fellow BT pundit Peter Crouch said: ‘The problem is you feel like you’ve let people down.
‘You’re looking at the fans on the way out, the staff members who’ve been at the club – players come and go – but the fans and staff around the club will always be there and you’ve let them down.
‘There’s a bit of anger in the stands here, disappointing scenes.’
Leeds United will join Leicester City and Southampton in the Championship next season, with Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town replacing them in the Premier League.
