They say what goes around comes around, and Lineth Beerensteyn found that out the hard way as Holland crashed out of the Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

Holland were sent packing from the tournament after a 2-1 defeat by Spain in extra time, with their opponents reaching the World Cup semifinals for the first time in their history.

It proved a controversial exit for the Dutch, who were denied a crucial spot kick when Beerensteyn was fouled in the box by Spain’s Irene Paredes.

Yet following consultation with VAR, referee Stephanie Frappart overturned the yellow card shown to Paredes and decided against awarding a penalty kick.

Spain then prevailed after extra time to reach the last four of the competition and eliminate Holland – much to the delight of former USWNT star Sydney Leroux.

After their quarterfinal defeat, Leroux couldn’t resist taking aim at Beerensteyn on social media following the Dutch forward’s comments about the US women’s soccer team earlier in the week.

Beerensteyn made no secret of her delight at USA’s exit from the tournament after their penalty-shootout loss to Sweden, accusing Megan Rapinoe and Co of having ‘big mouths’

‘From the first moment I heard they were out, I was just like, ‘Yes! Bye!’ she told reporters on Thursday. ‘From the start of the tournament, they had really big mouths and were already talking about the final.

‘I was thinking you first have to show it on the pitch before you talk [big].’

And following Holland’s own World Cup elimination, Leroux had a brutal message for Beerensteyn on X.

The 77-cap former USA forward said: ‘One thing we’ve learned is wait to talk s**t until after you’re on the podium with a gold medal because now… you’re bye too.’

Spain opened the scoring against Holland thanks to a hand ball in the box by Stefanie van der Gragt, which led to a penalty converted by Mariona Caldentey.

Van der Gragt then redeemed herself with a fantastic shot from distance to tie the match at 1-1, only for 19-year-old phenom Salma Paralluelo to fire home a sensational winner in the second half of extra time.

However, Spain’s victory was marred by the controversy over the penalty that wasn’t – with discourse split as to whether or not it was right to overturn the initial decision of the referee.

Numerous soccer commentators and fans took to Twitter to express their opinions on the decision.

‘Should be a penalty and a red card,’ said former USA defender and FOX Sports pundit Alexi Lalas.

‘Don’t know if there’s enough evidence to overturn this. Soft pen, but a penalty nonetheless. I think Spain got lucky here,’ said the account of the popular American soccer podcast ‘The Cooligans’.

Former USA striker and Apple TV soccer voice Taylor Twellman simply tweeted out a series of emojis conveying shock, then eye-rolling followed by a clown face.

Others believed that the referee was right to overturn the initial decision.

‘I’m genuinely shocked (not really) at how many people think this was a penalty,’ one user wrote on social media. ‘Now I will say that I don’t think it was a clear and obvious error for VAR to intervene on, but looking at the play in a vacuum it wasn’t and should never be worthy of a penalty IMO.’
