But the Reds did secure FA Cup glory with the second of two penalty shootout victories over Chelsea they enjoyed at Wembley last season.
Liverpool played out 0-0 draws with the Blues in both the FA Cup and League Cup finals but emerged triumphant in both matches after they went to a shootout.

Liverpool could have to call on third goalkeeper Adrian for this one.
First choice stopper Alisson is definitely out, but is expected to return for next week's Premier League opening game.
And backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has also had an injury-hit pre-season.
Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is also out after picking up a knock in training.
Aymeric Laporte is ruled out for Man City but Ruben Dias is working his way back to full fitness and completed 57 minutes against Bayern Munich in pre-season.
